Rocco Baldelli, the pride of Woonsocket, Rhode Island and once one of the best young players in baseball, could be on his way back to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Associated Press is reporting Baldelli hopes to be playing with one of the Rays' minor league teams after extended spring training ends in 10 days. Baldelli went 0-for-5 in his second extended spring training game on Saturday.

If you're unfamiliar with Baldelli's story, he's been out since May 2007 with hamstring problems and a mitochondrial disorder that causes extreme fatigue. It was thought Baldelli may never play again. In 419 games, Baldelli has hit .282 with 48 homes and 221 RBI. He's 26 years old.

I admire Baldelli's persistence and refusal to give up on playing baseball. It seems like every time he would make a great play, the injury bug would bite him again. Especially with the mitochondrial condition, something career-threatening, I give him a lot of credit. Obviously his health comes first, but his dedication to baseball is awesome.

Rocco, I raise a bottle of Sam Adams in your honor.

Soco? Are you even old enough to have one BigP?!

Besides Meg...while most boston bars won't serve it, do your best to acquire a good ole Irish Car Bomb...

All kidding aside, nice to see baldelli making his way back

Wow! That is great news! Rocco is such an amazing guy with a lot of heart. I'm glad that he is getting better. After a career ending injury like that, I never thought that he would be able to play again. And check this: he's only 26! After what? 4-5 years in the Majors, and out for 2 more years, I, as well as many people, would love to see him come back.

When Baldelli comes back I guess Gabe Gross would be the odd man out. Baldelli would be an upgrade over Gross even if Gross has hit a couple of game winners.

Hey! I have an idea. Use Baldelli for 8 1/2 innings. Whenever he gets to bat, just put Gabe Gross in. That way, they're both productive. They both get playing time, and the Rays will be happy with how many game winners they'll hit. Problem solved.

Whether he makes it back or not, he won't be a Ray next season. They bought him out of his options and if (when) he IS healthy, they'll deal him anyway.

He'll have to feel better and also play bnetter than last season if he hopes to even get a shot back in the bigs.

Also, the Rays are carrying one too many pitchers right now, so Gross could stay up with the big club if Rocco returns...

Oh, and the mitochondrial disorder is pretty much the root cause of many his nagging injuries over the years... not the other way around.

Great to hear this good news. Regardless of what team he plays for, this is a guy I can get behind and root for. There aren't enough athletes like Rocco Baldelli around (not the injury part, but the spirit and true heart).

Hey Meg, looking forward to the NBA Finals now that your Celtics are four wins away from your dream coming true for your hoops interest?
