Awesome News
Rocco Baldelli, the pride of Woonsocket, Rhode Island and once one of the best young players in baseball, could be on his way back to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Associated Press is reporting Baldelli hopes to be playing with one of the Rays' minor league teams after extended spring training ends in 10 days. Baldelli went 0-for-5 in his second extended spring training game on Saturday.
If you're unfamiliar with Baldelli's story, he's been out since May 2007 with hamstring problems and a mitochondrial disorder that causes extreme fatigue. It was thought Baldelli may never play again. In 419 games, Baldelli has hit .282 with 48 homes and 221 RBI. He's 26 years old.
I admire Baldelli's persistence and refusal to give up on playing baseball. It seems like every time he would make a great play, the injury bug would bite him again. Especially with the mitochondrial condition, something career-threatening, I give him a lot of credit. Obviously his health comes first, but his dedication to baseball is awesome.
Rocco, I raise a bottle of Sam Adams in your honor.
