Article Score -- Raise it Up?

Posted by DNL

Right now, it takes 8 "points" to have an article hit the front page. Points are a mix of votes (+1) and comments by logged-in users (+.25 per commentor, not per comment).

Should we raise it? If so, to what?

You decide.

definitely agree. a big negative in my mind is that article don't get much more than 8-10 votes. while the new points system gives incentive to vote - i think needed more votes to go front page is a good incentive. though of course, you don't want the number to be too high or the front page could get stale.

PB makes some great points...namely enough points to make the front page turn over frequently enough that we don't see some sort of 3 day old baseball highlight there...obviously articles with tons of comments deserve to be there...

I think we'll (you'll) just have to experiment to get the right #...but perhaps something like 10-12 for now? Not sure if this was used perviously, but didn't is used to be based on some sort of formula of what previous articles got?

Generally, if an article isn't a giant piece of junk or a teaser link it gets bumped up...it should take a little bit more...but I would have trouble giving you an actual number...

Agreed a 10 pt mark may be good. The key is you want it to be somewhat difficult to make the front page, but you want the front page to be liquid enough that fresh articles are able to get there on a regular basis, if not it will become stale and that will keep people a way.

24 hour turnover I think is ideal?

I think it is fine the way it is. There are so many good articles that people don't vote on that end up with a score of 3 or 4. I think 7 or 8 to hit the front page is pretty good.

Maybe raise it up to nine, but it seems like "bad" articles usually get about five votes, so I think it's fine the way it is.

I think raising it to 9 at first and then to 10 makes good sense. When do you think we should do it?

Make it 10 or even 12, then have an "Up and Coming" page for stories with 7-8. That page would change more often and could give people a place to go who are looking for good new content without sweeping things off the front page too quickly.

Offer a few more points for the first couple of posts from new people. That might help.

Make votes count as a half instead of one. Still seeing a lot of substanceless posts getting promoted.
