Armchair Weekend Debate: Is Curt Schilling a Hall of Famer?

Posted by Kelsdad

In an interview this afternoon with KTAR Radio in Phoenix, (the local ESPN affiliate and flagship station of the Diamondbacks), Curt Schilling was unusually subdued and forthcoming on both his surgery and his future, with or without baseball.

When asked about his prognosis, Schilling mentioned it is his desire to pitch in 2009, as he has one more year remaining on his contract. Schilling indicated a best case scenario in which the shoulder isn't as bad as the doctors have stated, or his rehab will go better than expected. He then will begin baseball drills around April or May, 2009, spend some time in the Minor Leagues, and pitch for the Red Sox the second half of the season.

Worst case scenario has the injury being so severe the rehab itself will be a year, and at that point he will focus on quality of life, with baseball a non-issue.

When asked if he thought he had accomplished enough to be a Hall of Famer, Schilling answered, without thinking, a resounding "No."

When asked to play devil's advocate, if he were elected, and if he had a say on which cap he would wear on his HOF plaque, Schilling again answered with no hesitation, "Phillies."

When asked if he had any desire to remain in the game, he said his immediate plans would be "no", as he still has kids in school. If he were to get back in the game, he would prefer a front office type position where he would have both behind the scenes and on the field responsibilities, such as organizational pitching coach or a player development type position.

I don't think he'll get in the Hall of Fame. There are too many guys with superior numbers that are not in the Hall.

He's the type of guy whose legacy doesn't have to be validated by a spot in Cooperstown. He has three rings, basically single-handedly changed the attitude of the Boston Red Sox, and helped beat the mighty 2001 Yankees.

A Phillies hat? I'm sorry, but if he's being honest, he's a world-class bull-shitter for telling Boston fans how much he loves it here and how much the city means to him. I know it's his choice, and it probably doesn't mean much (since he probably won't even get in), but still, that surprises me.

Hey Meg, guess what? He's a world-class bull-shitter. Is, was, always has been.

Actually Meg, technically the Hall gets to decide what hat to wear, but they'll usually yield to the preference of the player.

And I think Schilling will get in. Should he? I don't know, it depends on how you define a HOFer. If he does, though, Mike Mussina should also be in.

Stiles, I always had suspicions. Only now are they confirmed. But hey, he helped win my team two rings. He can bull-shit all he wants, but he makes it come off as honesty (in an Ozzie Guillen kind of way), which I guess makes him even more of a bull-shitter.

The Phillies gave Schilling his chance, before he went to Philly he was a fat relief pitcher in Baltimore and Houston. He busted his ass there and the Phillies fans appreciated what he did and the type of pitcher he became. His wife is from there, his inlaws still live there, he has never been shy about wanting to return to the area.

And, despite the fact he had more success in Arizona and Boston, the truth is he wasn't the main guy, he was a second banana in '04, and last year was an afterthought.

Schilling is a first class bullshitter, (bloody sock, my ass), and despite his claims as a "good teammate," he pissed off more people than he would care to count.

Dizzy Dean talked himself into the Hall of Fame, and it wouldn't surprise me if Schilling goes on a five year campaign for himself, and if he does go in, it has to be as a Phillie. He sample of work elsewhere was either not big enough, or he was overshadowed by others. In Philly, he was the man.

World-class bull-shitter or not, he's a good pitcher. I think he's a HOFer, but not on the first ballot, nor the second one. However, it's not my call to determine his place in baseball history. He doesn't give a shit about me, so why should I give one-tenth of a shit about him?

If you're not a HoFer on the first ballot, HOW do you improve your status by waiting?

It's the stupidest thing. Your career has already been over for 5 years BEFORE they start to vote on you - HOW can you increase your chances by waiting?

It's stupid and I hate that people accept it as "OK" for the voters to do that shit.

Either you're a Hall of Famer or you aren't. The End!

What do you want me to say? Schilling means nothing to me. It's not like my life will be affected if he makes the HoF.

I'm only offering my two cents to this debate. Am I saying he's deserving? Hell no!

There's a grocery list of players more deserving than Schilling and they all have been waiting a long time.

If Schilling gets in, it will be because of how he performed with Arizona and Boston.

People in Philly, Arizona, and Boston rightfully think he should be in, and they always will. This will help him. He's playing his cards just right no this one. No one can argue with the Phillies Cap comment and no one can argue with him saying "no" in response to the question do you belong in Cooperstown. This guy is a Tila Tequilla level attention whore but he is much smarter, and more calculated.

I think he should be in, no one else has gone to two team with the same purpose and had the success he has. Post Season results should count and if they do he is a lock for hall. Not first ballot, those are for the Best of the Best. But there is no way he should have to wait for the Veterans committee based upon his Post-season success. I'd compare him to Mariano Rivera, except Rivera has enough regular season numbers to get him in.

I hate the Artist but love the Art. The guy was money when the big game came around, he just did not get enough big games. Look at his post season numbers and remember he was key to the Red Sox winning in '04. That should be enough to get him in. And I hate the fat arrogant jerk.  ;)

I don't think any pitcher should go in before Blyleven. 3701 strikeouts has to mean something and 60 shutouts. Pitching 11 years with Twins, 2 years with Rangers and 3 years with Pirates and 5 years with Indians didn't get his name out there very often.

Yeah, <Mylf> and I went wikipedia crazy last night and there is no reason why Blyleven is not in the Hall. None. Did you know there is a Silver Slugger award for the DH? Seriously. I hope there is an award for foul pole of the year as well.

I think there are pitchers more deserving than Curt, although he has had a great career. But I wouldn't trust him with a dollar though.
