ArmchairGM "Beat Writers"

Posted by DNL

Here's an idea I'm kicking around. Not sure if there's enough interest, but if there is, I think it could make the site here really stellar. Let's focus on football and baseball for now, but if there's demand for basketball, that's cool too.

There are 32 NFL teams, about 20-40 college football teams worth mentioning, and 30 baseball teams. That's roughly 75-100 teams.

I'm looking for a person per team -- one person -- to be a beat writer. What that means is simple: Twice a week, the team's "beat writer" would write a 300-1000 word article about their team. Anything about the team is fine, but it'd have to be newspaper-quality and length. Basically, you'd be telling the rest of ArmchairGM what's going on with your team.

If you're interested, edit this page and sign up for a team. I'm going to take a team at the end (because I'm sure there's a long, long line to be Mr. Met.)

(Oh, and read this!)

This is different. It's a lot more focused, and I'm asking for (honestly) very little. I just think it'd be really cool to have 200 articles/week that are in-depth, focused pieces on teams. Think about how places like MVN or SBNation do it. We could do it too, without losing the ability to write about random other stuff like we are now.

And think of it this way, too. Right now, each team has a pretty good landing page. If you sign up to be a beat writer, that page would basically be yours :)

That was what I was thinking. We're not going to fill up all of these spaces. For example, is there anyone that is going to do a team like the St. Louis Rams or the Miami Dolphins (not picking on the teams' fans, I'm just stating examples)? I don't think so. I think there are some people on this group, myself included, who are willing to write more than just 1 article.

I think this could also be another way of recruiting users. We might not have many people here who are committed enough to write an article each week on one of their teams. For example, we don't have many Astro fans. I think there is an Astros group somewhere on the internet. Just ask them if one of them is interested in writing a 300-1000 word weekly article for a specific team.

I hesitate to pick the Suns - Sure, I am an "expert" on them, but writing about them on a regular basis this season would be a drag... I'll stick to being a "fan" of the Suns - and I won't get too cocky this year so David Stern won't fix it so they get knocked out of the playoffs just to piss me off again.

If you guys are worried about the fact that it won't be 300 words, don't. It's not like you're getting graded on it; your rep might be effected though. If you write 2 sentences, we aren't gonna be happy.

300 words is not that much. It's putting 15-30 minutes on a team that you are interested in. It's about 1/2-2/3 page on Microsoft Word.

So yeah, don't worry about it that much.

  • You can take two teams if you think you handle it, but I'm really looking for a commitment here. So, do it right :)
  • Yes, it's first come, first served, but please defer to someone if you think they'll be more committed and if you can take your second choice. Remember, I could have said "I get the Mets!"
  • If you want a college basketball team or hockey team or EPL team, etc. take it. The initial leagues were a suggestion only.

I don't think it needs a formal title. You're just signing up to write articles. I was clicking through a lot of our team pages, and you'll see that each team gets about 1-2 articles a week, so, you'll have at least 50% of that page. Think of each team page as a group blog, where you're the lead writer... functionally, that's what's going to happen... I think.

I've been trying to help build up the NHL side of this site, so hopefully more join in on the fun! Yeah, no doubt it really hurts that the Coyotes have been horrible for a while now. The fans have been staying away in droves and that's what makes it so hard. I know what potential the Coyotes can have with a winning team and passionate fans in a packed arena every night. It used to be great in the late 1990s in downtown Phoenix. Hopefully those days will return sooner than later. Kelsdad, please by all means feel free to write whatever you like on the Rangers! I strongly encourage it! Anytime, man.

The Coyotes are in a truely unique situation. I've been to Diamondbacks and Cardinals games, and there are usually more fans rooting for the other team. The Coyotes don't have that problem to the same extent. They're at least trying.

I don't think they will be as bad this season as people think. People criticized Wayne Gretzky for not being the management type, but most of them are unaware of the ownership issues for the past few years, preventing the team from spending money. Considering the bad hand he was dealt, Gretzky has laid the foundation for a young team that will only get better, and once they do, will be good for awhile.

I'm going next Saturday to the Stars game, by the way.

I'll go ahead and take the Marlins and Dolphins for sure. I basically write articles and features on them a few times a week on my blog as it is, so I don't mind doubling up on here. Unless of course you'd object to me posting something I've done on my own blog...

This beat writer gig comes at an interesting time. I've been toying around the idea of seriously perusing being a beat writer as a career for the last couple of weeks. While on a much smaller scale, this will be an interesting challenge to see if I can keep up with my writing along with my regular activities.

Just a suggestion-I know you're looking for a group blog type page, where there is a lead writer and everyone else joins in the discussion, however, for teams like the Sox , Yanks, Patroits--teams with large followings, I don't see why there can't be 2 or 3 lead guys. There is definitely plenty of info out there to support a couple of guys.

I'll take the Jets, they need the support in these times of trouble.

I got the memo pretty late, because I was working a BC hockey game (called after 2 periods, BTW, due to humid weather leading to poor ice conditions). I took the Bruins. I figured the Red Sox would be snatched. I thought, maybe the Patriots (my employer), but figure'd somebody would nab them. I at least figured BC football would be there (my contract employer). But, the Bruins will be fine. I'll take one for the AGM team.

I have to start NEXT week (just quit a very lousy time-consuming job, have to finish out the week) but then I will have the time to do this. Just wanted to grab my teams, hope no one minds.

I'm thinking of choosing a college team (you can probably look at my avatar and guess which one). Obviously basketball season would be the highlight, but I'm wondering if we can just take a "University Beat;" basically write on the major sports but occasionally about other things when it warrants. That would cover most of the year--summer being the lightest period. What are your thoughts?

So basically we just post at least twice a week, a newspaper type of article on our topic? Like a normal post, right, there's no special formatting or different place of posting these, correct?

I'm covering the wild b/c the Pats are taken, the Twins make me want to cry, the Wolves don't exist in my mind anymore, and that leaves me with the Vikings, which I couldn't give a damn about,

DNL, I'm not sure if it's because all the Mets fans here are hiding after the end of the season or because they have such respect for you, but I think the Mets beat should be all yours.

It will probably be pretty easy for AMilke60 to cover Navy football considering he plays for them. So, AMilke, I am expecting great in-depth articles from you about Navy football(if you have the time to write them).

Ahh yes, Jay Mariotti. A little known historical fact about myself. Once upon a time, I was immortalized as an obscene blog poster in a Chicago Reader article:

BTW - My quote was completely out of context!!

I am hereby resigning from post of Buffalo Bills beat writer. I'm afraid I just dont have the time/intrest in the Bills to go twice a week and put my full heart into the writing. If anyone wants help with the Pats/Sox/C's let me know and I'd love to help any way I could.

One piece of advice I have so far is don't call yourself a blogger. When I've advertised AGM before, and used Blog, or anything of that nature, it's been a turnoff. When I emailed a Star Tribune Writer, and referred to myself as a writer, I got a response, and he took a look at the article.

took my name off, was going to handle my AZ Cardinals, but I realize I am not up for the task, too much going right now to be relied upon for 2-a-week. I'll keep reading though.

Don't sweat it, Orod412. I have not had as much time as I originally hoped myself in posting a beat article as frequently as Dan has requested, but I will still be contributing regularly. On my upcoming Rangers article I'm putting together, I'm doing an overview of the first half of November. I might do a quick recap of their recent 6-game homestand if appropriate. For me, I try to put out quality more so than quantity. Very few and far in between will I post something real short about a breaking news item as the Martina Hingis and Yorvit Torrealba postings were for me.
