Announcing Imaging System 2.0

Posted by Alex Holowczak

We have a new imaging system in place.

The picture you get when you use different templates is now improved.

Image:MiniUnitedStatesFlag.jpg generates this: Image:MiniUnitedStatesFlag.jpg

However, Template:flagicon|United States generates this: Flag of the United States

You can see that the image is much enhanced. Anything you used using the old miniflag system, you might want to convert over to this new format.

Furthermore, there are new developments.

Template:Team United States now generates wiki links, like this: Flag of the United States United States

You get the same thing if you use Template:flagcountry|United States

If you are using a flag variation, provided it is uploaded, then you can use them.

For example, Template:flagicon|South Africa shows this: Flag of South Africa

But, Template:flagicon|South Africa|1928 shows this: Flag of South Africa

If this image doesn't work, you'll get a red link to the flag you need. Go to the wikipedia page of the exact title, and upload the .svg format picture here.

All flag information is stored here: Category:Country data templates.

Not all countries are on there, so if there's one missing that you need, go to the wikipedia page and copy it onto an ArmchairGM page of the same title.

Also, some templates like Template:Team Russia are not all switched over to the new format. So please feel free to copy the format from something like the Template:Team Russia over. It should be obvious which haven't, they won't have the country wikilinked. I figured we could maybe use the wikilinked countries at some point for something interesting and useful.

Importantly, some templates you've used on something before may now be up the creek. Take a look at my latest article, for instance, and notice how the templates have been butchered by these changes. Teething problems, I hope.

I hope you like the new imaging system.

[edit] Update

I think the new country pages could have this sort of thing on them: England. The red links can be filled out. It contains all the stadia, sports etc. All can be copied from wikipedia, of course. Thoughts?

Well, I had to bug Pean slightly... Until yesterday, you couldn't upload images in .svg, only .gif, .png and .jpg. But .svg seems to present the highest quality image.

Well done us! Thanks for the help with the Country data things. And well done to Pean for setting up the use of .svg.

I have added most of the flags we need, so that process is 99% complete. After looking at everything, these are the flags that are experiencing problems:
  • Brazil
  • United Kingdom
  • Jamaica
  • Antigua & Barbuda
  • St. Lucia
  • Georgia
  • Andorra

Another fail I've noticed is Northern Ireland. Wikipedia has the problem too, however. It sometimes appears, sometimes doesn't. But I don't know why.

I've also transferred the futbol template over so that you can link a team to its national team page. For example:

{{ft|Argentina}}

becomes

Template:Ft

Whoops, didn't work in the comments. Trust me though, on a real page it works.

Correction, it's {{'''fb'''}}. fb, not ft. So,

{{fb|Argentina}}

becomes

Flag of Argentina Argentina
