An Apology, and Why Tyrone is Banned

Apology accepted Dan. In order to get the Wheat, you sometimes get the Chaff as well (or something like that). Maybe one of you writers can come up with a better analogy. Anyway, you saw an opportunity and took it. It didn't work out as you would have liked. That happens.

Dan, it is not your fault at all for what Tyrone did. Do not blame yourself for doing what is right for AGM. There is absolutely no need to apologize.

No hard feelings here, Dan. I don't think any of us will hold you responsible for his actions. You did what was right on both ends of Tyrone's tenure here.

It's even more pathetic that he threatened to sue a website run by a group of Lawyers, with no law background himself

I offer my services pro bono for any legal actions by or against Tyrone or any of his aliases. You should take me up on the offer Dan, I did much better than you in our 1st amendment class (can someone please check the archives and see how many times I have mentioned this little fact).

Over the last few months I have severely limited my participation on this site which was hard for me to do because it is run by people whom I know personally and consider to be friends of mine.

I had many conversations with Dan over the last year about my concern that everything they had worked so hard to create was being undermined by one individual. He was turning the site from terrific sports discussion to his own personal grievance website, and one in which a quick retort was more valuable than an insightful sports comment.

To his credit, Dan never waivered from his belief in the community. He never waivered from his belief that it was the communities' responsibility to police its own behaviour. Not one of the founders wanted the power or responsibility to be an arbiter of what was right and what was wrong.

So, I accept Dan's apology. Was he bullheaded in refusing to intervene for the benefit of the website? Yes. But was it for admirable reasons? Absolutely.

On the other hand, I think the community owes an apology to Dan, the other founders, and to itself. We are also to blame for the situation. We allowed it to happen. Many times we even encouraged it. Everytime we laughed at one of Tyrone's quips, everytime we engaged him in a non-sports conversation.

I have said multiple times, even in conversations with Tyrone, that the basic principle of freedom of speech relies on the community to determine what is acceptbale speech and what is not. This is what JS Mill reffered to as the "Marketplace of Ideas." It was not Dan's responsibility to deal with Tyrone. It was ours. While individuals attempted to condemn Tyrone's behaviour, the community ultimately allowed it to suceed in our marketplace. For that we owe an apology.

I commend you in your extreme patience, Saint DNL. But you do not need to apologize. Your intentions were very well based and honestly - there was some pretty damned good stuff that came from this trip, too.

I too would like to apologize to the community for my endless pipeline of gasoline thrown into it. After dealing with how many? trolls and Pnatt and the like I was foolish to engage with the inbaders that fateful week. It was honestly very fun and we had lots of laughs until my wife, her family and my dead brother were dragged into it.

By then I was in too deep to ever let go. If you haven't figured it out, I can be insanely relentless. I hope that the community can understand why I did what I did but also forgive me. This ongoing mess has absolutely made my name (both pseudo-names and given name) valueless on the internet. I am thoroughly embarrassed by the volume of effort and time I spent battling fools just because I thought it was the "right thing to do".

But I also stand by every word I ever said.

Tyrone and I are similar in some respects and like I told him many times, if he met me in real life or if he could have just been honest with me, we could have been very good friends and collaborated on some incredible ventures together... It's saddening. He spent so much time trying to put chinks in my armor - calling me racist, a liar, unemployed, fat, etc. (ok, I'm a tad "chubby") when in reality I am naked in honesty.

I truly apologize as well and have learned a valuable lesson - the only value hateful and unwarranted criticism has is the value you add to it by trying to combat it.

I think we have all learned a hard-earned lesson and today, we can finally move on and continue to grow this amazing and wonderful website for the future.

Let's not rehash this needlessly, let's NOT be Bud Selig and take Senator Mitchell's suggestion to heart: Learn from it and move forward. We have nothing to gain from living in the past.

as a relatively new member of the Chair, I had no idea about Tyrone's antics. I had some of his comments but just shrugged them off as someone trying to be an internet tough guy. I'm glad he's gone now though because the reason i joined this site was to talk sports with other diehard fans. I don't understand why things have to get personal on this site. Some of the comments get out of hand behind people hide behind their screen names or computers as try to flex their muscles. I sincerely beleive that this website has alot more to offer than just negative commenting and child like outbursts from some people. As long as we talk sports and enjoy writing and reading articles, then we should be fine. ok thats enough of this relatively newbie!
