Admin Discussion of Leslie Monteiro Comments Situation

Okay, can non-admins see this? And can the AFs?

I would like the AFs to be blocked, and the comments deleted.

One positive, if this is the first time this sort of thing has happened in over a year, we must be doing something right!

Drastic, but should AGM require registering an account to post? Would be easy to track future problems. Would also have the added benefit of preventing accidentally posting a comment while logged out.

Ok, i'm an admin, and was involved in this situation. First, I think that we need to determine where these IP's are comming from, and how they access the internet (school Proxy, internet cafe, dynamic IP), and determine what we can do to them about this. I say that in situatuions like this, everyone gets one community warning, I.E. an Admin says everyone is out of line, and if it continues, people will be blocked (account or not). I think though, that we need to follow something Wikipedia does, in that we shouldn't allow admins that were attacked by AF's (I.E. Davis and myself) to block those who offended them, as it's to personal to determine an apporpriate consequence.

I think it'd be nice if we had some sort of Mailing list or every Admin to use on Chat client, so admins can communicate easier without the AF's watching it. Next, I think that if we have someone who can track the IP addresses to monitor who posts more than once. I think that We need to make it known who is/isn't an admin, and then give users like Alex who are on a lot of the time the privlages to help out. l think that it might be useful if in situations like this where we could just remove the comments from the article (I know its easy, but your not supposed to do it). I think Pean and Awright put together a couple of Ideas last night that are pretty good.

If something is truly inappropriate or offensive, the delete it, but don't rip the voicebox from people who would generally not use their voice.

I like the Anon contribs on the site and it's a big part of what makes it a community. If you eliminate the Anon, then people AREN'T going to make opinions, people won't get to "test drive" the site and less people will join.

Obviously there's a lot of shenanigans and childishness with Anon comments, (it takes less effort to ignore them than pay attention to them) but there's been thousands of valid points as well. Many long time Anon's have joined and contributed. Don't throw the baby out with the dirty bath water.

Relax, let people do what they do, don't take it personal and keep your business straight. You can't control everybody and it won't make your life easier by trying...

When you rule a group of people out you limit yourself, not them.

Besides, weren't we ALL Anon's to begin with?

I agree with both Manny and False Prophet here. We need to find the balance b/w giving people the voice they deserve ad figuring out how to manage malicious content without crushing that voice. As Armchair grows, more and more of these problems will crop-up. It makes sense to plan for it now, and be ahead of the game rather than wait and have the community hurt.

We know anyone can see this. That's the point. Everyone should be able to discuss what needs to be done to prevent this from re-ocurring.

The thing that differentiates this site from YouTube and Myspace is that any discussion on potentially controversial issues on here is handled respectfully. No cursing is used, and even stuff like the Virginia Tech thing that could have spilled blood elsewhere passed off without a fuss on here. That's what makes this so good.

As I see it, this thing with Leslie Monteiro is disrupting the balance. We should take some sort of action quickly. As rather like the League of Nations in the inter-war period, if we don't act fast, we'll get walked all over by other potential anons. We don't want that.

I think we should keep the anon part of the site though, but perhaps there is a better way to use it? Perhaps if they can register, and then act anonymously from their account? That way, they would have an account, but if they choose to comment anonymously, then there is no way for us to tell who it is. That way, users can be banned too. Is that possible?

As much as I like the idea, I don't think that banning AF's is the right solution. I think that a big part of the problem was that we as registered users fed into it and turned it into a flame war. My philosophy with this sort of personality is that they're hounds for attention -- if you ignore them, they go away. I think we need a no-flaming policy and some sort of honor code. Like:

"It's too hard to actually police this and we don't want to take away the freedom that AGM and wikis in general give to every contributor, but we ask all users and contributors, AF's or regulars, admins or trolls, to please refrain from flaming, flame wars, personal attacks, and the escalation of same. Please work together to make this a safe, worthwhile, and stand-up online community."

The solution is not playing along with those types of people. That conversation was fed on responses. I've gotten into crap like that before and when I shut up, so did they.

Also, they claim that to ban them will be a ban on free speech. I think that free speech is all well and good. But I think we should impose a ban on free speech when it comes to criticising the authors of posts. I haven't really read many of the AF comments, but I could get the jist by the intervention of other users. They should not be permitted to "bully" users. And they should not be allowed to say their thing disrespectfully. Once or twice every now again is maybe not acceptable, but it's barable - but not thirty times in every post.

I think we all agree not to ban AF's in general. But what about when specific things like this happen. Should an admin be allowed to block a specific AF (by blocking their IP)? Or should we discourage blocking specific ip's and just ignore them?

I think it'd help if we set something up (IRC client, AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, private Meebo chatroom) where admins would be expected to be on every time they can deal with any situation. Users can report to whenver things get out of control, and all admins can talk about it then. Essentially, It's like what some of us do with AIM and the founders, but more open

I agree with the disclaimer idea. Wikipedia polices itself and there are different levels of users. The difference is that the conversation of articles is clearly either the 1st or 2nd most important part of this site (for me), so allowing anyone to change anything, especially comments, seems only to fuel the fire.

Ignoring it is a good idea, however it seems shortsighted, in that, like most message boards, trolls show up and do there things and admins are responsible for taking care of it

My concern is that, in this case, the attacks aren;t troll like definable (typically, I see trolling int he form of "the mets suck...their fans suck, etc" or "Big Papi does...[something explicit]" In this case, its a little unclear.

Not being a computer guy myself (Look, I can turn it on and type), I gather than blocking a specific IP is a very temporary solution, however IMO, perhaps admins, or specific members would be able to remove certain comments (False Prophet, I agree, its not a good idea to let those involved do said actions). The conferencing w/ admins seems a bit exclusionary...for people like myself (sorta), alex and I believe manny, as we're folks who are relatively involved (I seem to always go on hiatis), but either have chose or aren't involved administratively (I personally, feel like I wouldn't do it justice...and I'm not very good at computer stuff in general), however I feel like situations like that certainly would be helped with non-admin well regarded people (I'll even exclude myself). However, this type of "caste" system seems unfair.

To be honest, from a leyman's perspective, I will need to think about what should be done...but I agree, I enjoy AGM for the free forum and argumentative, yet not combative style (like alex said waaaayyy above). I go to this site, so talk about the usual sports junk and to avoid idiot bloggers/message boards where people are blindly homer like or just ignore all all contridictory posts, etc

The problem is that the people who are giving critic comments really do understand a thing or two about good writing and sports. It's fine to criticize, but better to offer criticism that points to where improvements can be made. JMV

I was just admiring my new ArmchairGM homepage. It is interesting to note that I can elect to choose "friends" and "foes". There is even a link to "start a war". That is a very appealing tool to assist towards an honorable cause shared by so many individuals.

Well Jamel, it appears that these little people, one specifically, have overly irritated you. I can understand that. I as you know, certainly respect your opinion. It is just the little people that grow up with the silver/gold spoon that feel some sense of entitlement that can cause the problem. Money does not cure all ills. Look at Paris Hilton. That's why I am being so stubborn with this. I guess it goes back to my childhood. I was born and raised in the southside of Chicago. My family had little money at the beginning and but we managed and scrapped by. However, when I was around 12 years old my father was asked to run a new division of a major corporation. You see my father worked very very hard and slowly climbed his way up the corporate ladder. A nice gentleman who he worked for took my father under his wing and gave him the chance of a life time to shine (hence my symbolism regarding my daughter). We moved to the northshore and very suddenly was brought into new wealth. We went from a small two bedroom condo to a 6 bedroom, 5 full bath house- pool and all. I thought my life was going to be great-- thought I was living in a fairy tale. This all occured near the beginnning of the summer- things all changed when it was time to go to my new school.

You see being a 12 year old black kid with a big afro who talked funny wasn't exactely warmly welcomed. The kids made constant fun of me-- kids can be cruel. I wasn't allowed to play baseball, soccer, football, nothing-- no sports at all. They called me Aunt Jemima and constantly asked me if I ate pancakes all day. This went on for years and years until I grow up good and strong. I eventually tried out for all the sports team and became a star playing football, baseball, basketball- even hockey. Most kids accepted me; however, there were always a few who tried to ban me from "socializing with them". They had the same attitude- you know, that attitude that they could never do anything wrong- they could never be punished-- you know that Paris FP attitude. Well, when I was 16 years old I went to one of these parties and well, let's just say one of the pretty girls wanted to see if the rumours were true about black men- her name was Candice. Very popular girl. Very friendly. Anyway, the word got out and two kids- Kevin and Fred- went up to me with a baseball bat and threatened me- told me to leave the "white girls" alone and to be with me "own kind". They started hitting me repeatedly with the bat. I had no choice. I had to defend myself- so I hit them back. Only once. Each of them. Knocked out some teeth of Fred and broke Kevin's nose. Police came. Arrested me. Sent me to juvie. Not one kid spoke up- not even Candice- to defend me. We eventually moved.

I won't let this happen to my Pauli Sha-na-na. I won't. The Paris FPs of the world must be stopped. I can only hope I can change one Paris FP at a time.

Thanks Jamel, I can relate. My h.s. teams had all black football /basketball players. As a short white kid I never had a chance. I never busted bones on the black guys after kissing their girls but I did need to stand up for a lot of other reasons. A lot more can be done with words than violence and people at this site get hurt easy. We all need to practice free speech and less censorship. If people here aren't intellegent enough to respond with a level above the last "flame", then they can forever cry and defend Leslie's questionable work in the name of being superior. Some are trying to get along. Some still feel the need to be in charge of what others say and read. Remember freedom is what started this beautiful country. As unpopular as Larry Flint is in some circles, I happen to like his work. That's my right to say that. I don't like Leslie's work and I can say that too. I hope Leslie can take a little, or lately it seems like a lot of criticism, turn it around and become someone that I may be interested in hearing from. Here is some sports for you. The Cubs relief pitching stinks and they are letting the Brewers run away with the division for no apparent reason. The Sox will probably make a move and end up in the playoffs. The Bulls are currently down by 3 in an elimination game that could go either way. The Black Hawks are completely irrelevant and could get beat by the Wolves. THe Bears are coming off a Super Bowl, but are dealing with idiot players and their even dumber agents so who knows how there season will turn out.

An last but not least, Jay Mariotti is the worst excuse for a writer or sports personality that Chicago has ever seen. If I left anything out I am sure you will let me know.

Second as for Mariotti since you say you are not familiar with his work* here it goes. The little man proclaims to have his finger on the pulse of Chicago. He does this in both print and on ATH. However, he very rarely goes to the games in person. He never goes to the locker room to interview anyone. And just the other day he got caught stealing a quote from the Detroit Free Press.

They lying little man then blamed the foul-up on his computer locking up and during his re-write "forgot" to give credit where credit was due. He then did not do a re-write an only "briefly" apologized agter being caught. So our disdain for him is that he claims to be all things Chicago, yet very rarely champions anything Chicago and deliberately goes out of his way to bash players, management, and ownership at every opportunity. There is that part in a nutshell.

As for walking through the forest at midnight, believe me I have done that and lived to see another day.
