A real national champion: Week Thirteen

I've missed the last few weeks--I was a little too busy on the beach in Hawaii to worry about the BCS. But I did want to get this up to compare to the final seedings next week.

There was quite a shuffle in the seedings this week. After a week on the outside looking in, Oklahoma is back in. A loss this week in the Big XII championship game would again remove them from the tourney, so they are playing a must win game this week. Their opponent, Missouri, is not in must win mode, but a win would lock up their #1 seeding for the tournament, which is always desirable. Moving into the tourney field for the first time this year is USC, thanks to their win over Arizona State, who find themselves bounced after holding the four seed as recently as three weeks ago. USC and Oklahoma also combine for a very intriguing 8 v 9 first round matchup. Several other tourney tickets will be punched this weekend as the conference championships are decided. This season is begging for a playoff.

For previous weeks, see Week Seven, Week Eight, Week Nine and Week Ten.

(1) Missouri (Big 12) West Virginia (Big East) (2)
(16) Central Florida (C-USA) Central Michigan (MAC) (15)
(8) USC (Pac 10) LSU (SEC) (7)
(9) Oklahoma (At large) Florida (At large) (10)
(4) Georgia (At large) Ohio State (Big Ten) (3)
(13) BYU (Mountain West) Troy (Sun Belt) (14)
(5) Kansas (At large) Virginia Tech (ACC) (6)
(12) Hawaii (WAC) Boston College (At large) (11)

Missed the cut (BCS rank):

Arizona State (13)

Tennessee (14)

Illinois (15)

Clemson (16)

Oregon (17)

USC vs Oklahoma, Kansas vs Hawaii, LSU vs Florida, and Virginia Tech vs Boston College all in Round 1? That would be sweet. I like this idea and have followed it every week you posted it. You could definitely make this into an article. I look forward to Week 14.

Not bad for an opening round, is it? Just imagine the build up into R2, Semis, and the National Championship.

Would Love to see that happen. As a Mountaineer fan, I know we are setting in a good position right now, but a playoff bracket like this, would be so much more entertaining and would crown a "Definite" Champion. BCS was and is a bad idea.

One small match-up issue: BC vs VaTech III? Is this a movie or college football?  ;)

Once again, I applaud your efforts and courage at not just crying about the BCS but telling us exactly what you think things should look like!

I'll write up my series of BCS defenses once the conference title games are done.

This weekend will surely knock the Trilogy out of alignment, but in other seasons might very well create this situation. I say: so be it. It's possible in the NFL and the world hasn't exploded yet. I look forward to your defense. Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News writes his defense every year, too, but I can counter everything he's got. I anticipate your challenge.

The trilogy happens as a result of regular season scheduling that has existed since before I was born (1975). The trilogy in college football is 100% ridiculous prior to the maybe the semi-finals of a tournament. Re-matches are rare in college football and I'd like to keep them down to a minimum if possible. They make for good story lines but there is such a thing as too much.

Well if writes twice as well as he speaks on ATH then I can understand how you easily counter his arguments. I think they use the dumbest sports writers on that show.

And please take nothing personal when I tear apart your plan the way most people tear apart the BCS. I will do so respectfully because you are trying to show us how something else would work, and half my argument is that everything would be f'd up.

No I just respect someone who is doing more than crying about the BCS. This weekend listen to the talking heads as if you thought the BCS was better than a playoff and tell what you hear? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! None of these over-paid loudmouths have the guts to put forward their own plan and subject it to criticism! They are worse than politicians. You at least have the courage to say "This is how I would like things set up." thus opening yourself up to critique and I will do that, but I will not just cry 16 teams is too many! No I will respect your effort and say hey look this is why your idea is as bad as the BCS, if not worse. I had to freak out and get like 5 minus votes to get people around here to give me a number for a playoff. You voluntarily set up things the way you'd like. I'm not a scholar or a gentleman I just want people to play fair and have some rational discussions. Irrational insanity has it's place but for me, on this issue, there's been too much of it.
