A real national champion: Week Eight

I posted the first projected sixteen team playoff last week with the release of the first BCS poll. You can find that poll and an explanation of my system here. I'll likely post the final bracket as an opinion, but I think the Locker Room is the best place for all the interim brackets.

Rutgers sure shook things up, didn't they? With the Scarlet Knights' upset of South Florida, Connecticut takes over as the current leader of the Big East. Yes, Connecticut. Maybe a football tourney has ramifications that I hadn't considered: put together a college tourney and UConn thinks you are talking to them. South Florida has hung on to remain in the tournament, although it is much lower than last week's number two seed. It was a good week for the Pac-10 as both Arizona State and Oregon both made big leaps in the seeding. The SEC took a beating, though, as South Carolina and Kentucky each fell out of the tournament with disappointing losses to conference opponents. In other news, Houston took over the C-USA lead with East Carolina losing on the weekend.

(1) Ohio State (Big Ten) Boston College (ACC) (2)
(16) Houston ( C-USA) Central Michigan ( MAC) (15)
(8) Virginia Tech (At large) West Virginia (At large) (7)
(9) Kansas ( Big 12) South Florida (At large) (10)
(4) Arizona State ( Pac 10) LSU (SEC) (3)
(13) BYU ( Mountain West) Troy ( Sun Belt) (14)
(5) Oregon (At large) Oklahoma (At large) (6)
(12) Connecticut (Big East) Hawaii ( WAC) (11)

Missed the cut (BCS rank):

Florida (11)

USC (12)

Missouri (13)

Kentucky (14)

Virginia (15)

Wouldn't it be huge if Virginia managed to beat VaTech and then upset BC in the ACC Championship game? I think it's unlikely, since the Wahoos' offense is pathetically inept, but that defense lead by top-5 draft talent Chris Long is very, very good.

I think there is going to be a big shakeup this weekend. There is the potential for some big upsets at the top.

A 16-team tournament that doesn't include Florida, but has Troy could definitely use some work. I understand that your taking conference champions from champions like the WAC and Sun Belt, but this type of tournament would receive the same criticism the current BCS system does.

And what criticism would that be?

Look no system, playoff BCS, or teams picked from a hat will be fair until they standardize the conference championship game issue. It's not fair to the winner of the BC/VaTech game, to LSU, or Oklahoma that Ohio St and the Pac-10 winner (ore/usc) has to play one less game, and that one less game is a bowl eligible (at the very least) opponet. Heck BC and VaTech could end up in a re-match, regardless of the outcome of tonights game. Fix this, either by killing the cofnerence chmpionship game or forcing the Big ten and Pac-10 to expand and have one to stay in the BCS. Then we can start to fix what's wrong with the college football Nationla Champion selection process. 16 teams is ridiculous and will half of the time result in a two-loss team winning the title, that to me is 100% unacceptable! you may be able to talk me into an 8 team system, but for me any playoff that is more than 4 is fatally flawed and will result in too many games under the current scheduling format.

Yes, a playoff system is so flawed that every single other league does it. We take sixteen teams out of thirty for the NBA and NHL, but you are complaining about 16 out of, what, 119, in college football?

The regular season matters in college football, it does not in the NHL and NBA. We saw the lakers of shaq/lobe sandbag it until playoff time then roll through and winn a few titles. It's embarrassing. The lack of a playoff is also what makes college football unique. 16 teams can work if there is a major adjustment in the scheduling AND we are prepared to accept a 2 or 3 loss national champion on a regular basis. The schools will resist the first and the fans will resist the second. So 8 teams is a max with a drop to 4 teams if there are not 8 teams with 1 or 0 losses. Everyone thinks a playoff would be this magic fix, but the reality is it is not so easy. There are many other issues that need to be worked out before a true playoff can be installed. There is no silver bullet fix, especially not a 16 team playoff.

I definitely agree that there are other problems in college football, including the discrepancy in how conferences determine their champion (although I don't see that as quite a big problem as you do--a smaller conference where everyone plays each other, or plays nearly everyone is a fair way to determine a champ, whereas a bigger conference needs a championship game since they don't play everyone else otherwise). But the major problem is twofold: the inability to determine which two teams most deserve to play in the championship game, and the problem of an unbeaten, but perhaps untested, mid-major. This playoff system solves both issues. The rest is minor details in comparison.

Oh and I give you credit for giving brackets as they would look today! Someone gave me crap about that somewhere (maybe not AGM) and it pissed me off. The "if things started today..." should be a fair way to explain the system you want in place.
