A Slight Alteration of the Code of Conduct

I was perusing the CoC today and see if there was I way I could ban SSReporters (there's not...for the record) and came across a potentially confusing issue.

Under the Commenting section it lists "off-topic" as a potential "violation" of the CoC. It think this term was originally intended to ensure no one drags other random stuff onto the thread without reason, but I also think that in those instances it will either be ignored or be related to another violation of the CoC (like a flame war).

Additionally, the section at the end (Final Word) has the same issue: "As a member, encourage others to stay thread focused on the topic at hand." (it also has a typo because I'm good that way). Maybe that part isn't as egregious as the first, but it might be worth revisiting.

So in conjunction with the CoC, I guess I'm moving to amend this slightly - thoughts, ideas, blatant flames to call me a moron?

From the CoC:

Remember, this applies to the degree of which a thirteen year old could witness. [1] If a user finds a comment to be:

   * abusive in any way
   * off-topic (I want to remove this)
   * an ad-hominem attack
   * promoting hate of any kind
   * excessively foul language
   * blatantly spam

I'm fine with it. If a discussion goes off topic (which they seem to always do around this site), people will contribute where they want and ignore the rest.
Are you sure there's no way to ban SSR?  :-))

my sentiments exactly...I think its probably unimportant, but gives too much administrative power...

Like it or not, accept it or deny it... We're ALL on the same level here. It's a website where we all share the same joys, pains and responsibilities. And we VOLUNTEER this right (along with the shortcomings). There might be "Top Fans" pages, what have you but it's not a social order, it's not a multi-tiered Olympic medal platform and it's not a place where self-righteousness has any value. Feel the way you want to feel, share your opinions until we puke, but you're only fooling yourself if you think you are that much greater than anyone or anything in this life. You're dust in the wind, homey. Just like the rest of us.

I have a question. Who is the CoC for? Is it for the people who are already members of this community? Or is it for new and potential members? Or a mix of both? Because if it's just for us established members, then it can be self-policed. But if it's for newer people, it can't be.

Take, for example, the recent conflict between myself and another user. That certainly got off-topic. It could be argued that the other user utilized ad-hominen attacks, was abusive, and promoted homophobic hate. And we were certainly both at fault for being off-topic. Personally, I wasn't offended enough to complain to an admin about it. And most of the community rightfully ignored the discussion.

But what if a new user happened upon it? What kind of impression would they get? Is that the point of the CoC? To keep the site as clean as possible, and as unlike YouTube commentary as we can? If not, what the hell is the point of the CoC?

I guess what I'm saying is that maybe the CoC should be dissolved. It's too problematic and tricky. A simpler system of complaint-review-resolution would be better. After all, that's basically the system we've got now. If I or the other user had complained, or any other user complained, we'd be disciplined in some way. But newer users don't complain, they leave.

"It could be argued that the other user utilized ad-hominen attacks, was abusive, and promoted homophobic hate." - It could me more accurately argued that the other user didn't. Take, for example: Calling you "gay" isn't "promoting homophobic hate" in any way. I couldn't care less how gay you are, personally no matter how many times you try to woo me. Your sexual preference doesn't threaten (or persuade) me. P.S. - Please re-read the transcript again - the "other user" reminded you repeatedly ad nauseum, that your comments were off topic and "the other user" found extreme entertainment in your blatant lack of self-awareness. Please stop trying to drag other people down to your level then attempt to paint yourself firmly on the moral high ground... you're only fooling yourself. "We" - remember us - the community don't need to play your petite-minded/ego-lavishing games, ok?

Stop expressing myself freely and being myself. Check. nything for you, JuT.

I'll be sure to continue my LONG STANDING belief that each thread should be separate from each other. Meaning - don't drag arguments OR poor attitudes, foolish perceptions and weak assumptions from one thread to the next - I would LOVE it if other people would attempt the same.

However, as stated a MILLION times before, You get what you give when it comes to Uncle Manny.
