A New Tyrone Briggs Exclusive ArmchairGM Production

Tired of reading about the same sports 24/7 here?

Help me turn the tide a little so we may all broaden our collective sports minds.

The new links section has been a nice addition to the 'Chair. And I've taken a liking to reading about sports (boxing, wrestling, snooker, outdoors, volleyball, you name it) that typically do not get a lot of exposure here. In particular, strange headlines such as the German billiards player accused of blood doping, pique my interest.

So what I am proposing is a new Tyrone Briggs weekly feature here to highlight some of the novel, weird and unusual headlines pertaining to sports not commonly discussed here.

But I need your help.

Please forward me suggestions and the relevant link (cite source) on new headlines over to my message box. I'll consider a few and pick a weekly winner while given credit to the person who found the story/article. For argument's sake, let's say that the deadline will be every Thursday. I can work on a feature and hopefully have it out either on Fridays or Saturdays (depending on work/family schedule)

As for the format of this feature, I'm sure it will evolve naturally as time passes.

Maybe a new fun tradition (similar to the Fryer) can develop.

Thanks.

The less mentioned sport, the better. And the story has to have a rather unique edge to it. So people will want to read about it. Not really looking for "so and so beat so an so at cricket". Make sense?

This should be interesting, Tyrone. If something different and interesting comes up in this part of the world, I'll be sure to pass it on.

Thanks. Hint: The weirder and more obscure (but must be legit and verifiable), the better!

Noodling is barehanded catfishing. You reach around holes in muddy banks in hopes that a catfish tries to bite your fingers then you shove your hand into it's gills and yank it out of the water!!

Keep in mind that catfish get pretty big and have bony spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins, it hcan get very bloody (for YOU)

There is one guy that is far and away the World Champ - he has like 90% of the major titles - the most dominating athlete in ANY sport. Too bad I can't remember his name and am too lazy to look him up...

Why don't you start with the aforementioned German doping scandal in billiards. That piqued my interest as well. Why do they test in the first place? What is the history behind it?

Well, TB, I don't know about strange stuff, but I can give you a couple of sports sites for lesser known sports:
  • Cricket - Cricinfo has the results of practically every game played in the last 120 years. Most of them can be reconstructed, ball-by-ball.
  • Snooker - World Snooker is less updated, but it's not bad. Global Snooker Centre has practically every amateur event in the amateur cueing world, stuff like billiards, carom, snooker, pool etc.
  • Speedway - Speedway World has a heap of stuff related to Speedway.
