A Fun Little Sports Debate

Posted by SSreporters

I was watching The Best Damn Sports Show Period for a couple of minutes, and they had something about changing any rule in the NFL.

So it got me writing this for a fun community debate. If you had the chance to change 3 rules in sports, which would they be?

I would only change two rules: 1.) The NFL would have the same playoff rules as college football (no more first score, first to win) and 2.) The playoff field would be expanded to 8 because it's common knowledge that more playoff football = :)

Jeez, that's gonna take me a while to think about. But one of the rules would definitely be to change the "Home field advantage in the MLB All-Star game" rule. It takes out all the fun in playing. I know some might disagree with me, but that's honestly what I'd think. I think that the 2 teams should just play some good clean baseball; that way, no one can be that pissed about the outcome of the game.

NFL: I am totally for the college OT rules. The opposing team gets a chance to score after score is made. if tied after 2OT must go for 2pt conv.

NCAAF: 8 team playoff. IMO, most years, the top 8 every years could say the have some claim for a chance.

Here is a fantasy one for NFL: BigPlay points, any play over 50yds would be worth extra points. TD over 50: +2 FG over 50: +1

Teams would try for the Big play more often, and would give players that do make big plays on a regular basis more value.

I'll do one for each of the three big sports (sorry NHL!)
  1. NFL: Auction-style OT -- each team "bids" for starting position, blindly, and the team that chooses the worst starting position gets the ball at that point. Sudden death I keep.
  2. MLB: I'd put a chalk "balk line" on the mound. If you are on or over it when you release the ball, it's a balk. I call it the Andy Pettitte Rule.
  3. NBA: Cut the number of playoff teams to 10, giving the division champs byes, and making the "play-in" round best of 3.

1) Soccer - Reduce the field by 1/2 and create boards a la Arena Football

2) NFL - OT, both teams get a possession and/or 1 additional quarter of play straight up (not first to score)

Optionally each team picks one player and they enter thunderdome...

3) NBA - There's so many...I dunno, make fouls not as lame, and when the game says 1 minute left, you get the idea that it'll actually end soon, etc etc...

Basketball is a big one...I hate the whole system. Its like clutching and grabbing in the NHL.

I mean, you can beat the living crap out of a guy for position, but the moment he shoots (a little) or has the ball and you give him a little tap, its a foul...it slows down the game

And a lot less scoring too. There's got to be a way to create better defensive plays first. And yeah, this might have a lot to do with my lack of basketball knowledge.

I wasn't sure about posting it since many people might have hated me for it, but I'll come out and say that I agree with you. The DH rule sucks IMO for several reasons:
  1. The person only plays half the game, and they play the easier half.
  2. It makes it easier for people to achieve milestones.
  3. I personally think that it's not morally correct for baseball. It's like getting someone to shoot free throws for Shaq. It shouldn't work that way. Pitchers should get their chance to bat, whether in the AL or NL.
    • Plus, there are all those key situations that AL pitchers aren't AS familiar with than NL pitchers are, ie the suicide squeeze (don't see it as often in the AL than in the NL).

  • 2) Have the ability to send underperforming officials (in any sport) to the minors. If bad players can get sent down...

3 is kind of rediculous. The passing game would become nearly obsolete. If CBs can hit full on, they will. It won't just take out the Tom Brady's. It will hurt the Peyton Manning's as well. It also would lead to an increase in injuries amongst receivers. More contact means more injuries. That'll cause receivers to have to bulk up, meaning they'll lose speed. If you want an Old school, smash mouth, 14-10 football, I can understand. But if you like your games to have scoring, it's a poor rule

Exactly, FP. In the "old days" players earned what they got. I played in high school in the '70's, before the rule change, and you could knock a receiver on his ass within the first five yards from scrimmage.

You ever hear of a pass play called the "bump and run?" It came from the receiver intentionally contacting the DB and breaking off the contact while he was regaining his balance. Today's rules have eliminated the play.

I agree with you Brady wouldn't be the only one affected, but he's the most prominent QB to have benefitted from the rule.

Its pass interference when the ball is in the air, always has been. Look it up, most playoff teams are pass oriented teams, always have been, even before the rule changes. I agree with you point about the success of the league, and its because people want to see offense. Same in baseball with the strikezones and DH, same with the NBA with the three point shot. Most rule changes are done with the fans in mind, but they don't necessarily make the games themselves better, and they have hurt football from a playability standpoint.

Back when the wheel was square and I played basketball, there were very few jump balls. Why? Because we actually had to jump for the ball. It was a pain in the ass.

Now, the game is completely different. There are fewer reaching fouls, and a helluva lot more jump balls. At the HS and JHS level, a jump ball is called at the drop of a hat, but a player has to practically mug someone to get a foul called.

I don't get it, if you can take the ball all the way to the hoop with you hand, why can't you block it all the way to the hoop. Would get rid of the DH immediately...would change the rule if it is still in effect about how much time a pitcher has between pitches making it strictly enforced with less time between pitches and would eliminate the balk rule altogether since some umpires call it and some don't. Bob "Balk" Davidson seems to have an agenda calling balks but he may be interpreting the rule the way it should be interpreted. There just needs to be more uniformity between the umpires when it comes to balks.
