5th set tiebreak

Why does the US Open have this dodgy system? Why can't they just play on until somebody is two games clear in the final set, like they do in every other Grand Slam? They even use that system in the Davis Cup. There is a match between Novak Djokovic and Radek Stepanek, which, after coming on for five hours, the match reached (Stepanek first) 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 7-5 5-7 6-6. Now, why can't they just continue to play games until two clear, rather than a tiebreaker in the fifth? The two games clear seems much better in the final set, in my opinion. What do you think? For the record, Djokovic won the breaker 7-3 to advance.

Just imagine how long that match would have gone if they had to play until someone broke. Djokovic had another extremely difficult and exciting match today against Juan Monaco. He pulled through in 4, 7-5, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 but it took 4 hours... man that guy is getting a workout

Honestly, I think five sets in men's grand slams are ridiculous to begin with, so a tiebreak is not a bad thing. If they had three set matches, I'd be with you. But there's no reason for a 2 1/2 hour set like the Roddick had against El Aynaoui in the '03 Australian.
