2008 Olympics Open Thread Day 5

Good news for GB, after trailing 2-0 to Argentina, our women's hockey team drew 2-2 with the Argentines.

Also, we currently have a man in fourth place in the C1 Slalom.

Eller has just won a gold medal in shooting. Faulds missed bronze for us. A bronze for China, too.

Joe Murray just lost a fight where he should have had twice his actual score. He was fighting a Chinese, and not only was the Chinese running away from him in the last round (literally running away), but he was also the judges gave him points for everything, whereas the Brit scored at least 5 points that weren't given. The Brit was never going to win that fight.

Our strongest badminton pair, Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson are about to lose to the Chinese #2 seeds. It's a shame, because they won silver in 2004, but an injury to Robertson meant they were unseeded for these Olympics (they couldn't play), and his fitness doesn't appear to be 100%.

A final in women's soccer: US beats New Zealand, 4-0. Haven't seen the game, but the scoreboard says the US looked at lot better in the previous two matches. They win their group (avoiding Brazil) and move onto the quarters.

The US women's team should send something really nice to the Japanese women, who just gifted them a brillant opportunity to medal. Japan beat Norway 3-1. As a result, the US wins the group over Norway on goal difference. The US will play Canada in the quarters, with Japan or China to wait in the semis. That also means the bottom half of the draw is brutal: Sweden plays Germany and Norway plays Brazil. Thanks to the draw, anything less than a silver medal would be an embarrassing failure.

Medal is not a verb... Unless you mean they're interfering with the women's football competition. But if they are, I wouldn't think you'd like to point it out. :-)

1979, then? My dictionaries are old, mine was published in 1984, so that could explain it. Actually, I believe the Internet age has sped up the English language changing into American English. If you look on signs in the UK about trains, you'll see "station", or "railway station". Yet in colloquial terms, nearly everybody now says "train station", which is acknowledged as the Americanism. People also say airplane over here now, instead of aeroplane. People nearly always use "z", when we use "s", e.g. recognised instead of recognized. There are numerous other examples, and in my opinion, it's all your fault! :-P

Prior to the internet and everyone having a TV a word like Ginormous would have had to have been used for many years and by a ginormous amount of people before it was added to the dictionary. Nowadays a word can become widespread and commonly used in a short time. See: Truthiness. Although I am a huge fan of truthiness.

Face it, English is facked up. You can't fight the tide. Every word in English has two or more meanings and 90% of the words in our everyday vocabulary were stolen and fabricated from other languages.

But 'Ginormous' is positutely one of them there mosterly stupiditious of words, indeedy do.

Truthiness was a word. But people stopped using it, in favour of truthfulness. Now thanks to you lot, I'm reading, it's back again, and it means something else.

I'm not denying that language evolves over time, it's just annoying that our language is evolving into yours. :-P

I like to make up my own rules Manny, when there are options as to your choice of word. For example, you can use eldest, or oldest, when referring to a person. But you must use oldest if it's non-human. I like to insist on using eldest in the human situation, rather than oldest. Purely to differentiate, and to be honest, show off. :-P Most of the time though, people think that there is a choice between which words you use at certain times. However, it tends to be people not knowing the rule. For example, less and fewer. I heard yesterday people insisting that there were less people than they thought, when it should be fewer people, because people are countable. But that's my game, if there is a genuine case of an option, I make up rules just for the sake of it, because I'm cool like that. :-P

Another pet hate, people who (not people that...) "try and" do things, when they really mean they're going to "try to" do things. You wouldn't try not and do something, you'd try not to do something. If people just thought...

Lack of education conveys lack of expertise or understanding

ergo, improper use of language adds (or takes away) from the message...

I mean, how many times have you heard older folks (probably baby boomers...or those who are around 50 and up for alex) complain about the odd verbiage of the internet (TTYL, L8r, IMO, etc)...don't you think that damages some of the message?

I use emoticons, particularly ":-P", but I limit myself to those. I always talk using English, even to my friends on Instant Messaging software. When people ask me why, I say, because I can! Considering a lot of conversations I have with people take about a minute for a reply, given that they have other conversations to tend to too, I find there's ample time to type out a message in full. I don't know if I believe that some of the message is lost. I just think it conveys negativity, sometimes. It shows laziness, I think. I find a lot of people know what they're doing, but they're too lazy to type a message out in full. Also, they're too lazy to look it up! I rarely go an evening without checking words in a dictionary, even Wiktionary from time to time. The English language is a beautiful thing, its complexities and eccentricities are amazing. It really disappoints me to see it butchered so badly. (There's another one, a friend nearly always writes "dissapoints", I've had to correct him basically every night for the last 3 years now).
