2008 Minor League Prospect lists are on the way

Posted by Kelsdad

As promised, once the Major League teams have gone through their farm systems and analyzed everyone's performances, their Minor League Prospect lists will update for 2008. Well, thanks to the staff at Baseball America, the Major League Scouting Bureau and each team's Player Development departments, the time is now. Between now and Spring Training, I will touch on each organizations top ten prospects.

I won't touch too much on this season's numbers because they can be easily found. What I will try and accomplish is taking those numbers and putting them into context on what to look for next year, where they will play, chances of reaching the majors, etc.

Some lists, such as the Phillies, will be incomplete due to trades, Michael Bourn and Mike Costanzo both were on the Phillies list which just came out. So I'll talk about them when the Houston Astros is available.

First one, hopefully later today, the Atlanta Braves.

PS. Read them carefully, I'm still collecting residuals on my recommendations to people who listened and went on to win their fantasy leagues. Thankyou Ryan Braun!!

Nice article about the two of them in this weeks Baseball America. The Rays apparently don't care about his average, might spend the first month or so in Triple A and end up being a Ryan Braun, called up late May, early June. They absolutely love the kid, probably more so than any player in their system, including Longoria.

Brignac has the skills, just not the output. Obviously it's just fall league and 30 games but his minor league numbers indicate he'll do better than .167 I've seen him hit a lot of balls real hard - and right to people. But his glove and footwork is for real, arm is more than adequate.

With Will Inman gone from the list, I'm interested to see who ranks No. 1 in the Brewers organization now. Gotta believe it's LaPorta because of his time in the AFL. Though Jeremy Jeffress and Brent Brewer will probably be up there too. Wonder how far Angel Salome's stock fell.

LaPorta is probably the top Brewers prospect but still a season or two from majors but he might surprise and make it sooner.

He's a patient dude with a great makeup and superior character. He knows he's on the slow pike to Brattown and he won't stop working to get there. The thing about LaPorta that amazes me is how he "plays" baseball. He has a great freeking time when he's on the field. He beams with joy. Hell, on Wednesday night I watched him in a pre-game round of Pepper and he was diving all over the place having a blast! The guy lives for baseball.

LaPorta will start the season in Double A, regardless of his Fall League or Spring Training performances. Despite his numbers so far, he is still learning a new position, which can't be accomplished in thirty games. I assume his time in Instructional League in December with Robin Yount will make a huge difference, especially since he's a park rat according to Manny. And, again, look at Braun. He had a good 2006 minor league season, a better than expected Fall League and led all of the major leagues in spring training homers in 2007 and was still sent down.

Learning a new position can't be accomplished in 30 games? Good job he doesn't play in the NFL! :P

A-Rod learned to play 3rd base for the Yankees in exactly 1 game (The All-Star game when he slid to third so Cal Ripken could play shortstop)
