2000 Baltimore Ravens Vs. 1985 Chicago Bears
I wondered what a matchup between two of the best defenses in NFL history would look like, so I had the 2000 Ravens play the 1985 Bears on WhatIfSports.com. I designated Trent Dilfer as the Ravens starting QB, and set the Ravens' offensive playbook to "Favor Run." I set the Bears playbook to "Balanced." Then, I had the two teams play each other 100 times at Adelphia Coliseum in Nashville, Tennessee.
As one might expect, there were plenty of low-scoring battles. One such was an 11-6 Ravens victory, in which the Ravens gained 143 yards of offense and the Bears gained 144. Both teams turned the ball over multiple times in that game, setting up much of the scoring.
There were several high-scoring games, though, too. The Ravens chalked up 38-10, 36-16, and 30-20 victories over the Bears; and the Bears scored 41-20, 44-10, 29-0, and 31-17 victories over the Ravens.
In the end, though, the 1985 Bears had difficulty stopping Jamal Lewis. The Ravens captured the 100-game war 55-44-1. So, according to WhatIfSports.com, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens probably had the best defense of the Super Bowl era. Obviously, the simulation has its limitations, but I thought the results were interesting nonetheless.
