All Liverpool fans at the start of the game must have been biting their nails and hoping that their team wouldn't bow out of the Champions League at the group stages. Besiktas had already stunned Liverpool at home but Anfield is no easy place for visiting teams to come. The game visitors had an early strike at goal which gave Liverpool a warning, which ignited the fire within them. First half goals by Crouch and Benayoun set the tempo rolling but no one could have expected what was to come in the second half. Six more goals were hammered into the Besiktas to the joy of the faithful Anfield supporters. Benayoun completed his first hat trick for the club. surprisingly all his goals came from keeper spills which were left for an easy tap in. Gerrard added the fifth goal and then substitue Babel came and helped himself to a brace. His first goal was pure class and was reminiscent of Thierry Henry a few seasons ago, with a flick with his back to goal. His second goal was more of a fluke with a defender's clearance hiting him on the back and looping over the keeper. Crouch then headed home his second and Liverpool's record 8th, two minutes from time. The referee promptly blew his whistle after 90 minutes forgoing injury time. I think the damage had been done. It was a performance which would have left Benitez extremely happy. They are now sitting on 4 points behind Group leaders Porto who were 2-1 winners against now second place Marseille.
