Lipstick On A Pig: The 2007 Yankees

Free Runs Cost.

The New York Yankees' recent string of scoring a lot of runs masks the essential flaws of this team, flaws that were prominently on display Thursday and Friday nights.

Each night, the Yankees failed to get two 'free runs," that is, a man on second with no outs or a man on third with one or no outs. Runs that you can get without getting any more hits.

Thursday it doesn't look important because the final score was 7-0. But that was a 4-0 game most of the way, and 4-2, which it should have been, is much different psychologically than 4-0.

Last night of course the two free runs not gotten were the difference in the game.

Note that this has nothing to do with the team's 1-18 with RISP or whatever it is the past two nights. These were four runs we missed out simply by not making the right kind of outs.

This team has been horrible at this all year. The recent run-scoring outbursts against Tampa and KC (coincidence? unlikely) masked how poorly this team does with situational hitting, how ridiculously streaky they are, and how vulnerable the bullpen is.

Jeter, Cano, and Posada all had horrendous at bats in big spots last night (Jeter more than one).

Please Make That Deal -- We'll Throw In Airfare.

Rumor has it that the Tigers are interested in re-acquiring Kyle Farnsworth. Brian, make this deal NOW before Detroit comes to their senses. The arm isn't enough, as impressive as it can be. Farnsworth's fastball is straight, making it hittable at any speed, and he simply doesn't have the feel for pitching effectively in the late innings. He's a crummy teammate and a meltdown waiting to happen.

Hillenbrand Signs With San Diego -- Whew!

Shea Hillenbrand signed a minor league deal with San Diego, thankfully making it impossible for the Yankees to acquire him. As I've written before, offense at first base is not this team's problem -- Andy Phillips is more than good enough for the rest of this season. He plays a great first base and gets some big hits.

I Don't Make Idle Threats, But . . .

Rumor has it that Jason Giambi is close to returning to the lineup. If Giambi's return costs Melky an every day spot, I will have to seriously consider investing in a Mets' jersey. For whatever reason Torre doesn't like Melky too much -- I guess being a huge part of saving last year's season wasn't enough for Joe -- and it won't surprise Me at all if Giambi DHs, and Johnny Damon and his .240 average go back into the outfield until Damon literally drops, since he won't ever go on the DL and heaven forbid Torre ever overrules one of his veterans.

By then it won't matter anyway. We'll be well and truly out of it. Hmmm . . . Wright or Beltran, for the jersey, do you think?

I Think My Clicker Is Broken!

Did Mariano throw 72 pitches in the ninth inning of the suspended game last night or did it just seem that way? Amazing how Torre knew he wouldn't need Mariano in the regular game. The man's a genius, I tell you!

I hope we do make the playoffs, of course, and if it's a week when we're hitting, we could do some major damage. But this team has big ugly warts . . . and I don't see any way around having to point that out.

Being a Yankees fan is Soooooo 20th Century.

I love it when Yankees fans say "We". It demonstrates that Organization-wide flair of Pride and Professionalism that comes with being a Yankee.

But Yankees fans always turn "we" into "they" in October... they never say "We're going golfing again early this year"! They say "I can't believe they still haven't won a World Series in this century!"

Well I have no choice but to be a Yankee fan . . . my team is my team, can't exactly change now.

And I do say "we," mea culpa on that one. But personally, I never say "they."

Right now, WE are very inconsistent and I'm not at all sure we're making the playoffs.

Why would the Tigers want Farnsworth? He is doing more more to help the Tigers by being on the Yankees then he would do if he was a member of the Tigers.

Personally, I don't understand why the Tigers would be interested, especially since they've already ridden the Kyle Farnsworth Crazy Train, but apparently they are. And I wonder if the Yankees not using him the couple of days has to do with Romiezzo's comment -- keep him out of games so he can't lower his trade value any further.

The Tigers are thinking about it, and after Farnsworth allows 50 runs to score for the next 3 days, the Tigers will probably say no, and the Yanks will be stuck with him...

and I'm seeing it again with the kids today! I waited a long time for them to make a movie!

Despite the horredous plot holes (What happened to SpiderPig? He just disappeared!), incongruity with travel and elapsing time (going to Alaska, buying a house and back in mere days) and tremendous twisting of the rules of physics (gravity doesn't work the same in Springfield) - It was pretty good!

They stayed true to what they do. It was like an hour and a half episode. Homer absolutely shines, Bart was very good (the nude scene was damned funny), Marge cusses, Lisa was solid and Maggie was... well, Maggie.

Flanders has some good one liners...

I would give it a B+ (which is an A to anyone else) only because Green Day was in it and Krabapple didn't fully expose her tits... I thought for sure she was going to...

Jason Giambi instead of Melky Cabrera is a large upgrade in the lineup. I don't know him personally, but I'm guessing a reason Torre wouldn't like Melky that much is because right now he gets on base at an average rate and doesn't hit for much power.

You talked a lot about situational hitting and stuff... here is Melky's OPS in certain situations: Runners on - .651 RISP - .554 Scoring Position, 2 out - .520 Close and Late - .563 Bases Loaded - .490 None On - .799

Here are Giambi's OPS for the same stats Runners on - .867 RISP - .865 Scoring Position, 2 out - .868 Close and Late - .930 Bases Loaded - 0 (1 official AB) None On - .769

But you're right... I have no idea why Torre would rather have Jason Giambi in the lineup over Melky Cabrera.

Melky Cabrera has literally never been an above-average hitter (according to OPS+, albeit in a short career), while Giambi has been above-average every year in the league except 2004 (when he was hurt the whole year and only played 80 games). That might be another reason...

The Yankees are aging, injury-prone and inconsistent. There isn't going to be any October baseball in the Bronx this year. It may be a long season, but most of it's gone and Boston isn't opening the door too wide for the Yankees.

There's always the chance that something could go wrong with Fenway or Shea, etc. and they would need to move an October game or two - Yankee stadium would be available!

I would not be surprised if the Yankess can move Fahnsworth somewhere, there's always a sucker and practically every actual contender needs bullpen help. I wish everyone would get off Melky's case, he's like 22, I think he's doing an excellent job instead of Fat Boy, steroid boy who cannot run from home to first without his face turning red and sweating and panting like an overweight, out-of-shape has been.

oh, and I forgot, dude, I don't care how many times Derek Jeter does not have a good at bat from now until the end of his career, you cannot be a Yankee fan and criticize him :)

Here's the thing. I wasn't trying to argue that Giambi doesn't have offensive talent, and even when he's not hitting his ability to draw walks helps a lot because of the lineup that surrounds him.

However, anyone who can't see beyond the numbers a little bit to see that Melky gives this team a little spark of youth, a little energy, good defense and a plus arm in center field, isn't paying attention. Right now I'll take Melky over a another plodder in the lineup, especially if that means we're subjected to Damon in center.

Games create statistics, not the other way around. There are guys who contribute in ways that numbers will never adequately reflect. At this stage in his career, Melky is in that category.
