He has had a great career time to hang it up.

He's still the best player on a team that made it to the second round of the playoffs.

Very true, but the Aves are talented and have guys who are ready to step in and take his place, he has a few cups, i can't see him playing much longer.

Sakic is one of those guys who could probably contribute for a long time to come still. His style isn't terribly physical and his amazingly quick release on the wrister won't deteriorate too quickly. Personally I think it would be better for the Avs to cut the cord on Forsberg, Foote and Sakic (if he wants to leave) and build around Stastny and the other talented young forwards. And I'd give Sakic any job he wanted in the organization!

I agree, Sakic's a guy who could continue to add to the team with his smarts and raw hockey skills long after his physical abilities have eroded. At the same time, he's a class act who doesn't want to hang around and wear out his welcome at the expense of a young guy getting a roster spot. He's always going to have a place on that team if he wants one, but I think he retires either this offseason or the next one, and like you said, transitions seamlessly into a front office role for the Avalanche.
