Player Updates If the Lakers win the title this year: 2008
(Submitted May 24, 2008)
If the Los Angeles Lakers can somehow pull off a title run this year, Kobe Bryant will be considered (among those who know the game) one of the top 5 players to ever play the game!

So? That doesn't mean he doesn't still suck because he's Kobe Bryant.

I’m sorry, but I must respectfully disagree with “those who know the game”, the unnamed majority you referred to. Kobe Bryant will NOT automatically be considered one of the top 5 players ever if he wins another title this year. Here are 6 players to consider ahead of Bryant:

Michael Jordan: 5 MVP Awards, 6 Championships.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 6 MVP Awards, All-time leading NBA scorer, 6 Championships.

Wilt Chamberlain: 4 MVP Awards, 56 NBA records, 2 Championships.

Bill Russell: 5 MVP Awards, 11 Championships.

Magic Johnson: 3 MVP Awards, 5 Championships.

Larry Bird: 3 MVP Awards, 3 Championships.

Or:

Kobe Bryant: 1 MVP Award, 3 Championships (4 if he wins this year).

It's about more than just MVPs and championships, though. Oscar Robertson won only 1 MVP and 1 championship, but I don't think any sane person is prepared to rank him lower than Bryant. Besides, we all know Kobe's first 3 rings were Diesel-powered anyway.

Oh, I totally agree with you, Davis. You remember I'm a huge Wilt Chamberlain fan and I think he should have won more MVP's (1962?) and could have won more championships, but Chaseagum submitted that winning another championship is what would propel Bryant into the top-5. BTW: Here in LA, all the Lakers fans are already preparing their championship parties. Isn't that a bit premature?

Top 5 ever? WTF? Maybe "Top 5 in the NBA right now", but top 5 ever? Please. Off the top of my head, here are some players more deserving of all-time great honors than Kobe Bryant: Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson, Tim Duncan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Jerry West, Charles Barkley, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Shaquille O'Neal, George Mikan, Elgin Baylor, Bob Pettit, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, John Stockton, Kevin Garnett, Clyde Drexler, John Havlicek, Dolph Schayes, Bob Lanier, Rick Barry, Bob Cousy, Elvin Hayes, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Robert Parish, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Dave Cowens, George Gervin, Billy Cunningham, Clyde Frazier, Bob McAdoo, Tiny Archibald, Dave Bing, Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Sam Jones, Wes Unseld, Bill Walton...

Should I keep going?

Maybe you know so little about hoops history that you have to go to the 50 Greatest list to rattle off great players from the past, but I don't. Of course, to hear Kobe supporters tell it, the NBA didn't really start until KB24 (or is it KB8, I forget) hit the scene, right?

Kobe is Derek Jeter. A guy who gets a ton of credit for being "great" when in fact he is merely very good and it was his teams and HoF coach that put rings on his fingers, not himself. Although Kobe is MUCH better on defense than Jeter is...

Funny, didn't MJ also play under Mr. Jackson (which coincidentally, is when they started their dynasty)? Isn't that when he started winning all of his MVP awards and his 63 point performances were not put to waste?

And if you're talking about teammates (essentially Shaq), are you one to call Dwyane Wade so far, a disappointment?

And if the Lakers win this series (which they are halfway home to doing), wasn't it KOBE that ripped the Spurs apart in the 2nd half of game 1?

As for you Chasesagum, you are as much of a homer to the Lakers as ESPN is to (Boston team). Top 5 all time? Relax, he is only 29, give him time. If he wins 2 or 3 more rings and gets more deserved awards by the time he retires THEN talk to us.

And you know, I don't really hate Kobe, either, at least not like some other people hate him. But I'm so sick of hearing about how great he is, and his supporters are really accomplishing the opposite of what they intend by constantly force-feeding us this "Kobe is one of the best ever" garbage. He's a homeless man's Michael, a poor MJ imitator who has spent much of his career behaving like a spoiled, pretentious, ungrateful ass while riding on the coattails of truly great players. When all is said and done, he'll probably rank among the 10-15 greatest of all-time, but he ain't there yet and his image isn't doing him any favors, either.

I'm not even sure he's the best player in the NBA right now. Top-5 Ever must be reserved for truly transcending players. He is not that. But, he is really F-ing good. Isn't that enough?

Davis, there is no way that KG is better than Kobe, not now, not ever. Not even if he wins the championship this year will he be better. NBA Superblog, how can you say that he isnt ATLEAST top 5 rightnow? who would you say is better? I'd love to hear your answer

I didn't say that he's not in the top-5 right now. I said it's debatable whether he's even the BEST PLAYER in th NBA right now. The Top-5 Ever is a Mount Rushmore of basketball and Kobe Bryant isn't on it ... YET.

Top 5 Centers Of All Time: Wilt, Shaq, Russell, George Mikan, Moses Malone/Hakeem

Top 5 Power Forwards: Duncan, Garnett, McHale, Barkley, Chambers/Laimbeer

Top 5 Shooting/Small Forwards: Bird, Pippen, Worthy, Dr. J, Baylor (Lebron will find himself here in the near future)

Top 5 Shooting Guards: Jordan, Drexler, Robertson (because I have too many "big" PGs) Bryant, Iverson

Top 5 Poing Guards: Monroe, Magic, Stockton, West, Archabald, Kidd

Top 5 Active Players: Bryant, Iverson, Duncan, Garnett, Chris Paul/Lebron

I dislike comparing players in basketball from two different positions (whose better all time Isiah or Bird seems pointless to me.) However I have lots of fun figuring who is the best at each position and who are the top 5 players right now. So that's what I complied - I'm sure some super expert or NBA guru will come tell my my lists are facked up any moment but I think they are at least solid.

I hope some super expert or NBA guru doesn't come and tell you your lists are facked up, because he would be wrong to do that. Your lists are very, very good ... you just forgot Karl Malone in the power forward category. I'm sure that any super expert/NBA guru would agree with what you said.

Kobe in the top 5 if (and that's an IF) he and the Lakers win the NBA Finals this year? That's simply ridiculous. He will not be in the top 5 by the end of his career... let alone this year. He'll be lucky if he makes the top 10 in my book.
