Born on November 22, 1926 in Nitro, West Virginia, Lew Burdette (Selva Lewis Burdette) played for the New York Yankees, Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and California Angels over the course of his 18 year career. Burdette broke into the bigs on September 26, 1950 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 3.61 ERA in 137 innings pitched in 1952, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Lew Burdette's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1958, when he posted a 2.91 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 113 batters. However, others believe that it was 1956, when he posted a 2.70 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 110 batters.
