Let the debate begin

The popularity of the NFL seems to grow every single year. Sports fans, or at least that's the title we claim, are really just NFL fans who happen to watch baseball or basketball or hockey when the NFL isn't on TV. We enjoy sports, but we live football. We spend our time in March watching the free agent whirlpool spin, we spend April preparing in our minds what our team's biggest needs are in the draft, and we spend May and June reading about the OTA's, who's working out where and of course we all have our own criticism of every single move every team makes during the offseason.

When did everyone become an NFL GM? Why do we all feel that we have the answers for how to run an NFL franchise, to the point where now even EA Sports can no longer ignore it and has to produce an entire game franchise to exploit our need to control the league with NFL Head Coach (and yes I bought it the day it came out)? Simple, fantasy football. Fantasy football's popularity is unbelievable right now and debates rage as much about whether LaDainian, LJ, or Shaun should be the first pick in our fantasy drafts as their is debate on the whether Daunte can be the answer for the Dolphins at QB this season. Perhaps even scarier, and definitely more telling, is the fact that the debate is more fierce when considering the first pick in a fantasy draft than our team's offseason acquisitions. Why? Because it's our decision to be made and it's our time to play GM.

This opportunity we have had to play GM with our own teams and decisions makes us feel that we are better prepared or more adept at criticizing NFL front offices and players for the decisions they make, and truthfully we are. There was a day when NFL fans watched their team and their team alone on Sunday afternoons. That no longer happens. Why? Because our fantasy team's have players from 12-14 teams playing every Sunday. We watch every virtually every game intently to see how our guy does. We look at statistics from years before to see who the best player available is in the 8th round. And because we have players all over the league we are more well rounded. We see more than just our favorite team. We know exactly how 50 or 60 players are doing statiscally at any point in a season because we know our team and we scout the team we're playing. Why has the NFL taken off? Because we all feel involved. Don't believe me? Who would you draft number 1 Larry Johnson or Ladanian Tomlinson? I know you have an opinion and I'll share mine in my next article, but for now...let the debate begin.

Fantasy has taken over, that's for sure...but I feel that it has taken away something from the fans. Yes, today's fans are more knowledgeable (especially statistically), but I find that fantasy takes away from the fan experience a little bit. Quite often I end up rooting for certain players to fail just because I'm facing them. It sucks when that player is on a team that I like personally. I don't know, maybe I'm the only one that feels like that. Oh and LJ #1 all the way.

Fantasy sports have done a lot to offer more to fans than they have had in the past. I, for one, will have my standard 4 Fantasy teams this year - I will target LT in 2 of them and LJ in the other two.

Hey, you saw what LT did to my one fantasy team last year. You really want to go there?

I'm not sure about Fantasy this and Fantasy that. I understand it can increase interest in games you would otherwise care little about, but I'm not sure the fantasy system is good. DNL put something up about a Madden style Fantasy system, and that sounded the best I've heard.

Not only that, but players whose stats give you fantasy wins don't always give their teams the best chance to win on the field. Yards do not always equal points, especially when the opportunity (i.e. # of carries, etc.) isn't factored in. Also, down and distance must be considered, as well as the score at the time. And fantasy football's emphasis on TD's is equally misleading -- some TD's are well-earned, but crashing across the goal line from the 1 looks the same as a 50-yard run when looking just at touchdowns. So I think fantasy has kind of corrupted our idea of what actually wins and loses football games (not that I'm going to stop playing, mind you)...

Another thing depends on that team's performance. A QB (e.g.) can have a great game but get pulled if his team leads 35-0 in the 4th quarter. Similarly, a QB can have an okay game for the entire game, and under some systems can end up getting more points.

Who did I draft in the 1st round? I had the 3rd pick (out of 10 teams) so it was easy - Shaun Alexander (Manning & LT were 1-2). As for me though, I used to just watch the games on occasion - been more of a baseball guy my entire life. My father used to watch virtually every game he could religously - not that it's a bad thing but when I was a kid trying to understand it and asked him a question, he went into long boring answers (which I later found out were 1/2 wrong) and I just got bored of it. 2 years ago, a good friend of mine got me into fantasy football - I didn't know squat but quickly learned (took 1st place - go figure). I also started to go to Lions games and then I really started falling in love with the game. Since then, I've gotten season tickets to the Lions (renewed again this year) and got Madden 05' and 06'.

Hi all - I'm in the keeper league. The players I have are A Boldin (DV5), W McGahee(DV4), R Brown(DV12), H Ward(DV3), and Branch(DV11). I own #3 pick. Here's a note that someone got L Johnson (DV7) as a keeper pick. The boils down to LT or S Alexander or P Manning. Who should I pick? either them or others such as Portis, S Jackson or T Owens? Please advise. Thanks.

How are the top two scorers in a keeper league not kept on whatever roster they were on? Anyway, LT would be the man, but I'm not sure that he'll be there. I personally think that Steven Jackson will be more productive than Shaun Alexander this year, and I'm not sold on Ronnie Brown as a full time back yet. So if it were me, I would pray that Ladanian is available and if he's not I would target Jackson and try to get a (Fitzgerald, Smith, Chad Johnson, Harrison) and look at QB in the later rounds, unless of course Peyton is stil there in the 2nd (fat chance)

whoever got drafted that year, like say in 4th round. Then next year, the rule indicates every rounds move up 3 meaning 1st round to keep him. If keep him, then lose a 1st rd pick. Drop him then keep the pick. We have 15 rounds. I chose R Brown in the 15th round so that's why he's at the draft value #12. Got it? Yea, I do have #11 in the 2nd round but Manning will be long gone if I passed him. Maybe T Brady or Hasselback or Delhome or possible top wr like T Owens, Moss, Holt or Harrington. I'm attempting S Jackson at #3 if LT and Manning gone then possible a top WR or T Brady. Thanks.

How about Shaun? He's the man with the #1 pick as far as I'm concerned.
