Matt Leinart is finally an Arizona Cardinal. According to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli, the erstwhile USC superstar reached an agreement with Cardinals on a six-year contract that includes a maximum value of $50.8 million(!).
The signing ends a two-week holdout that saw Leinart become the last of the 255 players taken in the 2006 draft to come to terms with their club. His basic deal averages about $6.75 million per season and includes $14 million in guarantees. It also features so-called "escalators", or bonuses that kick in when Leinart accumulates a certain predetermined amount of playing time. Rumor has it that Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich had a similar system written into his rookie contract -- which also happened to have been negotiated by Leinart's new agent, Tom Condon.
Having finally worked out his deal, Leinart will join the Cardinals in camp as soon as possible.
