Leicester Square Hall
[edit] HistoryLeicester Square became the home of the World Championships after Thurston's was bombed in the war. Numerous finals were played there, but that is insignificant, compared to the actions of Joe Davis (England), 1955. In the final match ever to be played at the Hall, Davis declared his intention to make a 147 maximum break. He attempted shots he would never normally go for, in order to make the break. The key shot came on 112, when he played a poor positional shot to get onto the last red. Instead of leaving it to the top right pocket, he was forced to play it to the bottom left, along over ten feet of cushion. As soon as he hit it, he cried "It's in!" Sure enough, it was, and Davis was perfect on the black for his 147. When only the black was left, as soon as he stroked it, he was congratulated by his opponent - before the ball was even in. Joe Davis (England) had yet again made snooker history, and unlike his number of World Titles, no-one could ever make a break higher than the one he just made (for all intensive purposes, see Snooker Rules, the free ball rule). Leicester Square would always be the place that hosted the first 147.
