Leggo My LeBron

First of all, it’s LeBron won’t re-sign with Cleveland. He has a clause in his Nike contract that doubles his money if he goes to New York, Chicago or LA. So, sorry Cleveland fans; you’re getting screwed yet again.

Only..that wasn’t right. LeBron IS re-signing.

“Oh fiddlesticks,” says the media. “We can’t have the biggest star in the NBA playing in Cleveland for another six years. Let’s make up some crap about him not signing a max extension and maybe it will come true. There’s still a chance he will bolt!”

Ugh. Whether it’s true or not, I’m getting tired of this. I thought having the brightest star in the league playing for my hometown team would be all smiles and rainbows. But I guess that only applies if your hometown team is in a “major market.” If not, well, the entire world will be working against you to try to steal away your star.

All we can do as Cavs fans is hope that LeBron understands. He will be a huge star and become immensely rich no matter where he plays, but if he stays in Cleveland his entire career and manages to break the curse this town has been living under for over 40 years, he will go beyond just a star. He will become immortal. There is no town that could love him more. Sure, any city would drool over the prospect of having LeBron, but nobody can have the bond with him that Cleveland does. If LeBron does for Cleveland what Michael Jordan did for Chicago, he will end up being the greatest Cleveland athlete of all time, and it won’t even be a close race. I just hope he realizes that.

It’s just a shame that not even LeBron re-signing with the Cavs is going to end speculation about him leaving. We will be dealing with this for the foreseeable future. One would hope that winning a championship would end the talk, but I doubt even that will do it. So, Cavs fans, your best bet right now is to turn off ESPN altogether. Just watch the games and enjoy LeBron while we have him (which will hopefully be until he retires at age 65).

Thank you. If LeBron wants to outclass Wade, and maybe even Jordan, than all he has to do is win a Championship or two in Cleveland with the cast he has around him. Every year the Bulls had a terrific supporting cast alongside MJ, LeBron probably doesn't have that prospect in his future. So ALL the credit will go to him and he will be immortalized in all sports, not just Cleveland.

I still think he should have taken a reduced salary -- by a lot -- to give the Cavs the cap space to sign another star.

Oh, and you're right... this whole thing is media driven. He signed a shorter contract because it made more sense to renegotiate then, not because he's hell-bent on being a Knick.

I don't think ANYBODY is hell-bent on being a Knick at this point. :-)
