LeBron Continues Redefining League

5
Vote

ESPN reported yesterday that LeBron James is planning on signing a shorter, cheaper contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers that will allow him to cash in after the current collective bargaining agreement expires.

The deal will allow James to sign a new contract after a new, much higher salary cap is set, adding almost 50% to the max deal he could sign now.

Today ESPN is reporting that Carmelo Anthony, who had also agreed to sign a max extention, is now negotiating a deal similar to James. It's not yet known if Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh - who have also been offered and agreed to max extentions - will look to travel the same path.

This may or may not be correct, but I have a hard time believing anything ESPN says on this issue, considering they originally claimed LeBron was not going to sign any extension. But I will admit, I have not seen anyone refuting this rumor so it's looking more and more as though it may be true. However, I don't see how anybody can know anything at this point when LeBron hasn't signed. The rumor started before LeBron and the Cavs even began negotiations. Some of this seems like wishful thinking on the media's part. But then again, maybe this is wishful thinking on MY part.

I think any of these players would be dumb NOT to do it the "new" way.

I don't know if I would label this as "Redefining the League," or just as "Players are becoming greedy and want to make as much garunteed money as possible in the shortest amount of time without having to stick around on teams that will never go anywhere."
