Latest FIFA Rankings Released - US Stays in Top 20

US Soccer drops 11 spots from 5th to 16th in FIFA's lastest soccer rankings (http://www.fifa.com/en/mens/statistics/index/0,2548,All-Jul-2006,00.html). Brazil remains at #1 while Italy improves 10 places to #2. The biggest movers in the top 50 were Switzerland (up 22 spots to 13), the Ukraine (up 30 to 15th) and Ghana (up 23 to 25). Big surprises are England's advance from 10th to 5th given their unspectacular Cup performance and Guinea ranked at 24th.

The rankings formula has been redesigned, under the new system:

  • games played only over the last four years are accounted for, instead of the last eight, as previously was the case
  • the weighting system gives more importance to World Cup games as opposed to friendlies
  • regional/opponent strength, goals for/against, home/away are also factored into the weighting formula

While I think the new ranking formula is an improvement, I think the entire proposition of ranking the best teams is a difficult one, given all the variables that must be considered. I still have an issue with FIFA considering team performances from 4 yrs ago (though obviously it is an improvement over 8 yrs), simply because the players on the teams flucuate significantly from one world cup to another. It is like ranking college football or basketball based on how a team did one or two years ago.

That said, what do you think of the new formula? (http://www.fifa.com/en/mens/statistics/rank/procedures/0,2540,3,00.html) What do you think of ranking formulas in general, say the BCS as an example?

I can't see how Italy is not #1 right now. The 16th slot sounds right for the US though.

This system is probably more accurate (not to mention easier to understand). USA and Mexico were definitely too high (both in top 5 pre-WC) before. The shifts after the World Cup are the interesting thing though. Nice jump for Ukraine, Switzerland, and Ghana (similar to what happened US and Senegal 4 years ago.

Like you said, it is difficult to rank teams based on 4 years worth of performances, but I think this formula works for FIFA.

It's the closest they're going to get to working out a true pecking order. I don't see the point of the rankings in the World, they go to nothing, other than Zonal Qualifying. So why not have a zonal ranking instead? That makes more sense, as those teams play each other more often, and it helps to seed the groups for qualifying more easily.

Alex is right - these rankings really mean nothing. Just like college basketball rankings mean nothing. They're just to appease fans (often coaches say they ignore rankings) and make us rank ourselves, which is often a futile endeavor. It makes disappointment hurt more. Unfortunately, they really matter in college football.

This system is a lot like the World Golf Rankings, where it gives declining credit for performances that occurred years ago. I'm glad Italy moved up to 2nd, and Brazil is still probably the most talented team in the world. One thing: how was the US fifth going into the World Cup? It's one thing to be a favorite but not advance further because you lost by a goal in a quarterfinal elimination match (like the Brazilians), but Team USA didn't look like it could beat anybody, and didn't even come close to getting out the round-robin. I don't even know if they're worthy of 16th at this point...

Here's how the U.S. got to 5: Basically, they were in the 20's before 2002. Then they make the quarters, shoot up to around 10. As the US has outperformed the rest of the continent including Mexico, they were picking up points left and right and creeping up in the rankings. Meanwhile, the Euro powers (England, Italy, Germany) were moving in the opposite direction, struggling in European Championships or qualifications (i.e. when England lost to Northern Ireland). So the U.S. rose up the rankings.

Is Guinea supposed to be Ghana? They're two different places...

It's listed correctly. Guinea in at 24 despite not qualifying for WCup. Ghana is at 25 even though they advanced out of first round. The new system is not without flaws.
