Born on March 12, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois, Larry Rothschild (Lawrence Lee Rothschild) played for the Detroit Tigers for his entire 2 year career. Rothschild broke into the bigs on September 11, 1981 with the Detroit Tigers.
Larry begins his fifth season as the Cubs' pitching coach in 2006. Has spent the last 31 seasons in professional baseball as a player, coach or manager winning World Series rings as a member of Cincinnati Reds coaching staff in 1990 and as Florida Marlins pitching coach in 1997. Went to the postseason for the third time as a big league coach in 2003. Since joining the Cubs in 2002, Cubs pitchers have led the majors in strikeouts every year, including setting a major-league record 1,404 batters in 2004. Was the first manager in Tampa Bay Devil Rays history. During his time with the Devil Rays, he served as a member of Joe Torre's 2000 American League All-Star coaching staff. The Chicago native is a 1971 graduate of suburban Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Attended both Bradley University and Florida State University where he received a degree in business management. At Florida State, he played on the Seminoles' 1975 NCAA regional championship squad.
Managerial and Coaching Career: Larry was the first manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, compiling a 205-294 record from 1998 through April 18, 2001. Finished 2001 as a consultant to the Florida Marlins. Tampa Bay increased its winning percentage in each of his three full seasons just the fifth expansion club to accomplish that feat. His 1998 Devil Rays recorded the best league finish in ERA and defense in expansion history (4.35 ERA fourth in the American League; .985 fielding average second), was named Tampa Bay's manager November 7, 1997 his first managerial position at any level.
Joined the Devil Rays after serving as Florida's pitching coach during the Marlins' 1997 World Series-championship campaign. That season, Florida's pitchers had a 3.83 ERA and surrendered a big league-low 131 homers. Was the Marlins' pitching coach during the 1995-1997 seasons. Began his coaching career in 1986 as a roving pitching instructor in Cincinnati Reds organization. After four seasons in that role, he joined the Reds in 1990 as their bullpen coach and won his first World Series ring. Was a member of Cincinnati's coaching staff through 1993, including a one-plus year stint as the team's pitching coach. Spent the 1994 season as a roving minor league pitching instructor in Atlanta Braves organization before returning to the majors in 1995 with the Marlins.
Playing Career: Larry pitched professionally from 1975-1985 including seven major league relief appearances during brief stints with the Detroit Tigers in 1981-1982. Pitched in 387 minor league contests (80 starts) and went 66-46 with 21 complete games, 50 saves and a 3.96 ERA. Saw Triple-A action in nine of his 11 pro campaigns. Signed with Cincinnati as a non-drafted free agent in 1975 and spent six years in the Reds' organization. In 1976, he led the Eastern League with a .786 winning percentage (11-3) at Three Rivers (AA).
Joined Detroit's organization in 1981. Finished third in the American Association in saves (15) at Evansville (AAA) and earned his first trip to the majors. Made his debut September 11 that season vs. Cleveland. Picked up his only big league save against the Indians two days later, retiring both batters he faced in an 8-6 contest. Finished his playing career in 1985 pitching for the Cubs' Iowa (AAA) affiliate.
