Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach Phil Jackson will undergoe surgery to replace his right hip next Tuesday, while his Lakers team will open training camp that same day. Doctors expect that Jackson will be released from the hospital on Wednesday.
Lakers spokesman John Black told the press Friday that, "It's to the point where he can't really function without having surgery," Black also stated that, "He's had a problem with it for a long time. He was hoping that by doing physical therapy, it would get better over the course of the summer. Instead of getting better, it got worse."
The Lakers did not give a timetable for Jackson's return, but Black and the Lakers expect that Jackson will be back on the job before the NBA season begins on October 31.
While Jackson recovers from the surgery, assistant coaches Kurt Rambis, Frank Hamblen, Brian Shaw and Jim Cleamons will share the coaching duties.
