Vote

Pitcher John Lackey has agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Angels on a three-year deal worth a guaranteed $17.01 million, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The contract, which runs through the 2008 season, includes an option year for 2009 that could bring the total value of the deal to more than $27 million.

Lackey, 27, has a career record of 47-38 with a 4.15 ERA in four seasons with the Angels. He went 14-5 with a 3.44 ERA last year.

Great deal for the Angels. Lackey is definitely worth this much.

He always gets off to such slow starts, but by the end of the season his numbers are pretty good. The question for this year is if he can keep his ERA to the mid-3s this year.

I am wary of the 4.67 and 4.63 ERA in 2003-2004

I think he is a much improved pitcher over the 2003-2004 version. He still walks batters but his K rate has jumped to a superb level and he rarely gives up a HR. Further, his batting average on balls in play was unusually high for Lackey last year. That should regress back to a more normal rate and his ERA should fall closer to 3.00 this year. At 27, Lackey could be one of the premier pitchers in the league.

Of course he goes out and gets crushed by Seattle the first day under his new deal.
