Kyle McDonald - The saviour of the worst sport franchises

In the real world, Kyle McDonald, from Massachusetts, used a series of trades to go from a paper clip, to a 3-bedroom house in the exceedingly good town of Kipling, Canada, in just under 12 months.
Could this happen in the American Sports industry?
For example, can the Kansas City Royals keep trading players like Reggie Sanders for a player that will help them, but is not wanted by the other team. After a lot of trading up, you'd eventually end up with Albert Pujols or Mariano Rivera or someone like that.
Anyone that uses "franchise" mode on Sports Games will know this technique well. Trade away one or two depth men for a slightly better player. And so on, until you've gone from Jesse Wallin and Mathieu Dandenault to Chris Pronger as I did on NHL 2K3.
What does everybody think?
