Kobe to Atlanta?

When Kobe Bryant first demanded a trade, I took it as a threat to the organization.  If the Lakers didn’t make a move and get him some help, Bryant would refuse to continue his career in Los Angeles.  Well, two weeks later, Bryant has realized what everyone else already knew.  The Lakers don’t have enough talent on their roster to trade for the difference-maker (Jason Kidd, Jermaine O’Neal) that Bryant wants to team with.  So now the question becomes what do the Lakers get in return for one of the best players to ever play?  A lot of teams will be interested in Bryant, but there are only a few that can offer the Lakers anything close to a fair deal.  One team that absolutely can is the Atlanta Hawks.  The Hawks have a terrific young nucleus in Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, and the #3 and #11 picks in the upcoming NBA Draft.  All of those players and picks would interest LA.  A possible trade would be Johnson, the #3 pick, and Williams to the Lakers for Bryant and Kwame Brown.  In this case, the Lakers would be able to draft Al Horford at #3 and would probably take a PG with their own pick at #19, such as Acie Law or Gabe Pruitt.  Say they get Law, which is a strong possibility, here’s how their depth chart for next year would look:

PG- Acie Law, Jordan Farmar

SG- Joe Johnson, Maurice Evans

SF- Lamar Odom, Sasha Vujacic

PF- Marvin Williams, Al Horford, Vladamir Radmanovic

C- Andrew Bynum, Ronny Turiaf, Brian Cook

Note:  This is assuming that after completing the trade, LA will not re-sign Luke Walton, Shammond Williams, Smush Parker, or Chris Mihm.

Atlanta might have to give up a lot to get Bryant, but if this trade goes through, the Hawks will automatically become one of the league’s elite teams.  Assuming they draft a PG with the 11 th pick, here’s what their lineup would look like next season:

PG- Javaris Crittenton, Speedy Claxton, Tyronn Lue

SG- Kobe Bryant, Salim Stoudamire

SF- Josh Smith, Josh Childress

PF- Kwame Brown, Solomon Jones

C- Shelden Williams, Zaza Pauchilla

Josh Smith would be the Scottie Pippen to Kobe’s Jordan.  In addition, they would have a very physical frontcourt with Brown and Williams and a potentially great point guard in Crittenton.  This Hawks team would be very dangerous in the East.

I hate Kobe. He's an embodiment of everything wrong with the NBA. From the off-court problems, to the self-centered play . . .

Honestly, I think everyone else that lives outside of Atlanta can attest to this, but I haven't seen a Hawks game in years. The staggered NBA TV schedule just won't allow it, and I even live in the Southeast! With that said, I don't know a damned thing about the Hawks, so I trust your judgment on this one. Go Sixers!

There's no way Kobes going to Atlanta. The reason why the trade rumors revolve around just 2 or 3 teams is because of the no-trade clause. Kobe wants help in the form of either a PG or a big man.

I'm not sure Scott Skiles would put up with Bryant's B.S. like Phil Jackson did.

If Kobe wants to play for a winner, why would he want to go to to the Hawks?

Let's be honest here, why would ANY already winning basketball team WANT Kobe Bryant? How would this primadonna acclimate in a lockerroom such as the Spurs or Pistons?

If I'm Kobe and I seriously want to be traded, I would want to go to the Eastern Conference. Once he's in the East, it will be a hell of alot easier to get to the NBA Finals. And once he gets there, anything can happen in a 7-game series. I know Atlanta doesn't get alot of time on national telivision, but that obviously will change with Bryants arrival. Anyone who follows the NBA knows that Josh Smith is one of the league's best young players, and would be the best teammate Bryant has had since...well, Shaq. Those two alone, along with a strong frontcourt of Shelden and Marvin Williams (or Kwame Brown depending on what the exact terms of the trade would be), will be enough to make Atlanta a contender in the East.

I definitely agree with you, KDuffy15. It will get a LOT, and I mean a LOT of pressure off of him. Why do you think LeBron and the Cavs got to where they did this year. If the Cavs were in the Western Conference, they wouldn't have had a chance. The Lakers were eliminated in the first round. Gee.. I wonder why. Kobe's _____ vs. LeBron's Cavs in the East...now THAT's something that I'd LOVE to see. Also, there are a lot of duos that could be made in the east, such as Celtics: Pierce and Bryant... Bulls: Wallace and Bryant (maybe trade a couple of their younger guys for him)... Pacers? (Jermaine O'Neal and Bryant). The people involved this situation in the NBA have to answer one of two questions: #1: Do you want Kobe THAT bad? #2: (Lakers) How badly do you want to keep Kobe, and what trades are you willing to make for a trade like this? (it could change the franchise for years...either way)
