Three weeks ago, I put up a quiz question asking:
"Who was the first black head coach to win a professional football championship?"
So far, 78 people have answered the question. Here are your results:
Tony Dungy, 70.5%
Lovie Smith, 0%
Pinball Clemons 29.5%
You guys are pathetic. The answer isn't Dungy, or Smith, not even Pinball Clemons. It's a mistake on me for thinking that Darren Arbet, coach of the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League, didn't count as a pro-football championship winner in North America.
Arbet won ArenabowlXVI with San Jose in 2002, so therefore he is the first black pro-football championship winner in North America.
Pinball Clemons won the Grey Cup in the CFL as coach of the Toronto Argonauts in 2004, making him the first black head coach to win the Grey Cup, but 2nd for all of North America.
Dungy won the Super Bowl last year, so he's way out of contention in this one.
You want to know the trick to this question? I never said NFL, I said professional football (but now the poll is screwed up because the AFL is apparently "Professional").
I apologize for the gaffe, and the poll will be deleted today.
