Klitschko Exorcises His Demon

"I have a family at home. Klitschko was the better man tonight. He had a good jab. I knew that I couldn't take those punches all night." - Lamon Brewster (as told to HBO's Larry Merchant)

While the rest of the world breathlessly witnessed an epic "rock, paper, scissors" contest on ESPN2, a heavyweight boxing match was fought in Cologne, Germany last night.

Wladimir Klitschko (49-3) scored a 6 round TKO against Lamon Brewster (33-4) in a rematch to avenge his previous loss to the American which resulted in 3 years of questioning the Ukrainian's heart and commitment in the ring. Those concerns were well put to rest by Klitschko's superior presence in the ring as Brewster's corner man Buddy McGirt ultimately requested a stoppage in the fight.

Brewster did not protest with his trainer. During the entire fight, he had absolutely no answer for Klitschko's commanding and persistent jab. And when later interviewed, the defeated boxer agreed with McGirt's assessment that prolonging the fight was only postponing the inevitable while increasing the risk of serious injury. Brewster freely admitted to Merchant that his future in the sport was uncertain and that his family and future health were paramount. He later congratulated Klitschko for his dominanting performance and thanked him for the opportunity to fight.

As for Klitschko, perhaps now is the time (he is already 31 years old) for a return to the United States and pursue a lucrative unification heavyweight championship match. The Ukrainian fighter seemed eager to prove his dominance in the division and pointedly asked Merchant during the post-fight interview who the HBO viewing audience wanted him to fight next.

It is no secret that the heavyweight boxing division has been in complete shambles since the retirement of a highly underappreciated masterfully fundamental fighter in the ring,  Lennox Lewis. Perhaps Klitschko, now very much in the prime of his career, is able to step forward and become its undisputed champion.

Id hardly call that fight exorcising demons. Brewster showed no heart and no intensity from the moment he hit the ring. Ive never seen someone TKO'd on jabs. Klitschko was without the better fighter and probably the best heavyweight in the world right now, but no way he can be happy with what happened last night.

It was just a simple reference to the fact that Lamon Brewster embarrassed Klitschko 3 years ago. No matter what Klitschko did afterwards, detractors always turned the clock back to Brewster trouncing him. Time has clearly caught up to Brewster but at least Klitschko delivered the goods last night (which admittedly required little) to eradicate doubts from that earlier fight and can now move towards unification of the heavyweight division which desperately requires a unanimous champion.

You did not miss much. However Klitschko did look sharp and focussed even though very little was required of him.

Saw this last night. It was pretty nasty - maybe a little anticlimactic, but those jabs were right on the button. All I could think about was the pre-fight background bio on Brewster and his detached retina. I'm all - Klitschko is gonna pop this brother's eye out with that jab!

Lamon Brewster and his corner seemed extremely concerned about his eye despite the initial denials.

I totally agree that Klitschko's the type of boxer that could inject some legitimacy back into the sport - now we just need a real matchup??? PS - Have you heard any of the rumors that Ricky Hatton will take on Mayweather? Now THAT would be a fight!!!!

Klitschko's camp needs to promote him heavier in the US as well as fight here rather than all these matches in Germany if the division is to be restored to a higher prominence. And Mayweather is currently the best pound for pound fighter out there.

I'd like to think Hatton is the best, but maybe he's just more fun to watch - He really bring it while Mayweather is and elusive defensive guy - I think Hatton is one guy that can lock Mayweather up with his exceptional clinch and bash him with those nasty hooks. We'll see if Mayweather wants more money, so his great grandkids get a lifetime of pizza parties too...

With the UFC gaining popularity, will boxing even be in existence in 10 years?

Very few sports can generate hype and excitement as boxing. Unfortunately after decades of corruption, the sport has been depleted of its fanbase. However, I hold out hope that improved marketing of the sport along with a more palpable public image (goodbye Don King, hello Golden Boy Productions et al.) will restore the sport to prominence.

YES. Two completely different sports. Any legitimate boxer/mma crossovers? There's some pretty funny videos on youtube of Butterbean in the cage. Tyson? I wonder if that crazy mofo thinks he can take on Fedor...

No athlete better personifies the exploitive 80s (yeah he's been around that long) and its excesses than Mike Tyson. When he was kid, those fights were electrifying. What a tragedy to such potential wasted.
