Born on April 8, 1915 in Columbia, South Carolina, Kirby Higbe (Walter Kirby Higbe) played for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Giants over the course of his 12 year career. Higbe broke into the bigs on October 3, 1937 with the Chicago Cubs, and put up a 4.67 ERA in 210 innings pitched in 1939, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Kirby Higbe's best season was 1941, when he posted a 3.14 ERA, won 22 games and struck out 121 batters.
