Kenny Rogers: 3rd or 4th best starter on his own team

And yet, there he is, starting the All-Star game.

I guess I can see Ozzie's reasoning on this one as far as guys on the team go - all of the deserving guys did start on Sunday (Johan, Halladay, Contreras...) but still, Kenny Rogers? Is this the best the AL can do?

Of course, there is the small fact that Kenny Rogers has been only the 3rd or 4th best starter on his own team. But who's keeping track of such things?

Kenny Rogers - 114.2 IP, 3.85 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 5.10 K/9, 65/27 K:BB, 15 HRA, 10 QS
Jeremy Bonderman - 119.2 IP, 3.46 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 8.35 K/9, 111/30 K:BB, 6 HRA, 12 QS
Justin Verlander - 110.2 IP, 3.01 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 5.61 K/9, 69/33 K:BB, 11 HRA, 12 QS
Nate Robertson - 115.1 IP, 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 6.09 K/9, 78/41 K:BB, 13 HRA, 11 QS

In my eyes, Bonderman and Verlander have clearly been better than Rogers, and Robertson is pretty debateable. Rogers is the only one that made the All-Star team.

I guess I'm probably starting to sound like a broken record with all of these All-Star complaints, but I guess I just don't understand why a guy that's the 3rd or 4th best starter on his own team is starting in the All-Star game.

Oh wait, I guess I do understand. It's because he's a 'veteran' and has won 11 ballgames.

But hey, at least this time again it 'counts!' Thanks Bud!

LIRIANO!!! Idiot White Sox fans, idiot MLB. 25 times from one email address, with free email addresses available anywhere on the net, duh. And they blame Cincinnati fans for stuffing the box in 1974, isn't that what is going on now?

Think about how much money MLB makes from online voting. It gives them a web presence that most can only dream about. The amount of ads they can serve and products they can offer is sick, and online voting gets the ball rolling.

The online ballot did not have any ad space on it, and that was what people saw. They only saw that the All-Star game was sponsored by Monster if they looked at the logo at the top of the screen. The web presence is greatly exaggerated, with a total of 11 million online votes. 25 votes per person, with people in evey teams marketing division voting hundreds maybe thousands of times, the real exposure is not as large as one would imagine. I'm disupting the ballot boxes in 3100 Wal-Mart stores across the country. Is that really necessary?

Well, this one has nothing to with the fans... Ozzie picked some of the pitchers and the starter. I'm just wondering why Rogers is starting while Verlander and Bonderman (2 better starters from the Tigers) are sitting at home.

Ah, the magical effect of getting 7.3 runs per 9 inning of support... Oh, but he has 11 wins, so he must be good, right?

Maybe Ozzie is impressed with how Rogers handled some media members last season.... :)

Monster was the only ad on the ballot therefore what? Therefore Monster paid for this

exclusivity. The web presence is in fact underrated. Ask Jewel. It's a behemoth worth billions, looking for more, and has its hands into the few remaining information sources

about baseball that make money--for the purpose of taking them out of business.

Is he the best the AL can do? No. But this is the best position for him to be in. He can do less damage as a starter than he can as a reliever. He only pitches the first couple of innings, where the AL will have plenty of time to catch up. Better to give up a couple of runs in the first inning or two than in the 6th or 7th. It's called strategy, something I wouldn't expect a Twins fan to know a ton about.

Hmmm, not sure the reason for the crack at Twins fans. I guess the better 'strategy' for an All-Star game would be not to have pitchers that you expect to give up runs on the roster. But what do I know, I'm just a Twins fan.

It also has to do with rest. Kenny Rogers was the most rested pitcher on the staff. He was one of the only pitchers that didn't pitch the weekend before the All-Star games, so there are a few things that went into it. And the best strategy would be to have pitchers on the roster that don't give up runs? Haha...find me a pitcher that doesn't give up runs, and let me know who he is, 'cause I'd like to meet him.

Well yes, as I said, I understood the reasons Rogers started, my qualm was more with the fact that there were at least 2 Tigers pitchers better than Rogers this year. And my wording was wrong, I assumed it would be understood but I guess not - it should be about finding pitchers less likely to give up runs. Of which there are more capable pitchers than Rogers, at least as far as the numbers suggest.

So, is your argument that Rogers shouldn't have been on the team at all, or that the Tigers should have had three or four starting pitchers on the All-Star team? Aside from ERA, their stats are all really similar, so of course the veteran with the wins will make the team. All other things being equal, of course they'll pick the man that's experienced and can win over the others. I have no complaint with Rogers being on the team. You wanna make a legit complaint, complain about Buehrle being the third White Sox pitcher on the team, instead of having Mussina or Schilling, both of whom had better numbers.

I guess my point was that he shouldn't have even been on the team. Looking it Bonderman and Verlander, the numbers aren't that close, IMO. Both have much better strikeout totals (Bonderman is far superior with over 3 more guys struck out per 9 innings). Bonderman is also much better as far as K/BB ratio, and Verlander is comparable there. Also both guys have given up fewer HR, and they have more QS, if you like that stat. But I suppose this is all moot anyway. FWIW, I completely agree with you about Schilling and Mussina, though I suppose that one is pretty obvious all around.
