Kelly Bates
[edit] BiographyAcquired: 4th Round (32nd overall) 2001 CFL Draft 2006: Started all 18 games as well as the 2006 West Championship and 2006 Grey Cup. Showing versatility, Kelly moved to centre during the game versus Edmonton in Week 4 filling in for an injured Angus Reid. 2005: Started all 18 regular season games as well the 2005 West Championship game. 2004: Missed 7 games due to a knee injury and made 11 starts. Notable: Has been a consistent starter on the Lions offensive line since the 2003 season. College: Bates attended the University of Saskatchewan where he was a core member of the team's offensive line. He won a Vanier Cup with the Huskies in 1998. Personal: Bates grew up playing hockey and baseball in addition to football in his hometown of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and idolized Wayne Gretzky. His family, particularly his brother Trevor, serves as a great source of inspiration for him. Off the football field, Bates has been an active participant in many BC Lions community events. During the off season, he stays close to the field, coaching budding football stars in White Rock, BC. During the off-season, Bates works as a teacher and holds degrees in Kinesiology and Education. A fan of all music genres, he especially likes to listen to country music and lists fishing and hockey among his favourite hobbies.
