Keith Hernandez Angers Padres with Insensitive Remarks

9
Vote

New York Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez ran his mouth. During the second inning of New York's 8-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday, Hernandez said that that women "don't belong in the dugout" after he spotted 33-year-old Kelly Calabrese, the Padres' massage therapist, in the dugout.

After hearing of Hernandez's statements, second hand, Padres manager Bruce Bochy stated that he was not amused by the comment and supports the female members of his training staff. He was surprised that the announcer made an issue of gender.

Hernandez also stated: "Who is the girl in the dugout, with the long hair? What's going on here? You have got to be kidding me. Only player personnel in the dugout. . . I won't say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don't belong in the dugout."

After these remarks, Hernandez then laughed and said: "You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there -- always have."

Wow, this might be more offensive than Rush Limbaugh's comments about Donovan McNabb

This is consistent with Hernandez' other statements about the joys of playing baseball. I'll have to dig up his quote about what he'll miss most about the game; something to the effect of shooting the breeze with the guys with a beer in hand.

Important question: is this "massage therapist" hot?

Hernandez's error was his failure to consider that she might be an employee of the team who did belong in the dugout. It was clear to me he thought she was a wife or girlfriend of one of the players and therefore did not belong in the dugout. It was a completely assinine statement on his part.

When I heard this at first, I thought Keith was refering to Khalil Green. He's got long hair too.

If baseball personnel in New York were fired for being jerks, the Yankees would have hardly any players left. I realize it's the Mets, and they're usually better about this sort of thing - but still, I think his job's safe.

Red Sox players are all Angels. The Yankees hate puppies and ice cream!

No surprise here. More of Keith Hernandez being the moron that most have known him to be for years. Has anyone posed the question - what is Keith Hernandez doing with a microphrone? Why does he still have his job?

I wish Keith Hernandez was the Mets manager. He may be sexist, but at least he wouldn't bat Kaz Matsui with bases loaded, two outs, and Beltran on the bench available to pinch hit....

Beltran has been injured? Why would they risk further aggrevation of the injury, when Kaz Matsui already had a hit in the game and had a decent series against the Padres. The only critique of Willie in that situation is that Matsui was batting from the right side for the first time all season. However, I would rather Beltran healthy over the possibility of a hit with 2 outs and the basesloaded.

Fine then how about Ramon Castro? He has been hitting very well this year and I'd rather him up there than Kaz anyday. Actually, I'd rather anyone up there than Kaz except maybe Chavez, Valentin and Andy.

The guy was a superstar in Japan, and it seems like the only Japanese superstar who's talents haven't translated into Major League production. This guy knows how to hit.

I don't care how Kaz did in Japan. Here, he looks like a little leaguer, and not even a good little leaguer. When he was up against Embree with bases loaded, he was swinging when the ball already hit the glove. He is just awful, and other than saying that he was good in Japan, there is nothing that you can say about his play here to justify him being in the major leagues.
