Kazmir to Open for Rays

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays named Scott Kazmir their opening day starter. Manager Joe Maddon reported that Seth McClung, Casey Fossum, and Mark Hendrickson will be in the Rays starting five, leaving one spot for either Doug Waechter or Edwin Jackson. Kazmir walked five batters in one-third of an inning against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday and walked four more batters today.

I love Kazmir's stuff...last year, as a 21-year-old, he had a tremendous K rate, had no problems with the HR ball, and posted a 3.77 ERA. If only his BB rate was not so dreadful, this guy could be one of the top pitchers in the league. If he can cut that BB rate to atleast an acceptable rate, which can be done, and maintain the rest of his stuff, Kazmir is not far from posting a sub-3.00 ERA.

I never thought I would say this after how much of a "can't miss" prospect Edwin Jackson was but I would no doubt take Waechter for this year in the 5 spot.
