Kazmir Continues to Pitch in Zambrano's Shadow

Scott Kazmir had his second bad performance of the year in his start against the Yankees on a rainy Tuesday night in a 9-1 loss in the Bronx. As the 22-year old lefty was outdueled by veteran Mike Mussina, Tampa Bay fans have to be asking themselves "What If?". Kazmir, the probably-will-miss prospect, was dealt to the Rays from the Mets in 2004 for the "mechanically sound" Victor Zambrano. Zambrano would have clearly made a great impact on this talented up and coming team. In fact, the Yankees probably wouldn't have even played Tuesday night out of fear, had Zambrano been seen warming up in the Rays bullpen for the game. However, Kazmir must now pitch the rest of the season being compared to one of the greatest Devil Ray pitchers of all time.

Kazmir pitched 5 innings, giving up 3 earned runs, 7 hits, and 5 walks, while striking out only 2 batters.

"This is just ridiculous", said Devil Ray fan Peter Gellitime after the game. "One start he is great, one start he is mediocre. Well Scott, what is it going to be??? At least with Zambrano, we knew we were getting mediocrity every time. This Kazmir clown better get his act together, or I'll have to start complaining about the trade for the next 4 seasons".

Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi each had 3 RBIs to lead the Yanks offense.

you really can't consider kazmir a bust at only 22-years-old. most guys aren't even in the majors at that age. i'm also not sure why you're so high on zambrano. he currently has a 1-2 record along with a 9.64 ERA. he also had a bad year last season, going 7-12 with a 4.17 ERA. i would much rather have kazmir.

As a Mets fan, I'd trade Zambrano (and a boatload of cash) back to the D-Rays for Kazmir in a heartbeat.

This was the dead giveaway: "However, Kazmir must now pitch the rest of the season being compared to one of the greatest Devil Ray pitchers of all time." That line in classic!

Kazmir will be an all-star closer one day. He will never be a great starting pitcher. I am a one man show on this one, but the Zambrano for Kazmir deal was not bad in terms of what the players will eventually do in their careers. It was only bad in that Kazmir had more percieved value than Zambrano at the time.

More value than Zambrano AT THE TIME? You make it sound like Zambrano's value will someday be equal to or greater than Kazmir's. Kazmir is only 22, and he's already better than Zambrano, who is turning 31 this year. Zambrano is on the downside of his career, and his ERA is 4.49 against Kazmir's 4.09. AND Zambrano's had the benefit of playing a couple of years in the NL, while Kazmir has only been in the AL. It's not just perceived value at the time, Kazmir is a better value, period.

31 isn't the downside of most pitcher's careers. Its usually their peak, no?

Well, there's a reason it's their peak. It's what they hit right before they start sliding down the other side of the mountain. That's why I say he's on the downside of his career - this is when he's supposed to be in his prime, and he's sporting an ERA well over 4.00. You can't really expect much improvement from a 31 year old. That's why he's on the downside of his career.
