[edit] BiographyKatie Smith is a shooting guard/small forward for the Detroit Shock. She attended the Ohio State University and graduated in 1996 with a degree in zoology. On Jan. 21, 2001, she became the first female athlete in the history of Ohio State to have her number retired. From 1996 to 1998, Smith played for the Columbus Quest of the ABL, which folded in December 1998.[1] In 1999, Smith was allocated to the Minnesota Lynx in the post-expansion draft player allocation. In 2005, she became the first American female basketball player to score 5,000 total points in a professional career. On August 16, 2007, she became the first professional women's basketball player to score 6,000 career points (ABL and WNBA combined).
In 2006, Smith became the first WNBA player to win the All-Star game as a member of both the eastern and western conference teams. She also became the only player to earn both ABL and WNBA championship rings when the Shock won the WNBA title in 2006, defeating the Sacramento Monarchs.[2] Smith is 3rd in the list of all time leaders in scoring in the WNBA behind Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson.
