Justin is the younger brother of Major League Baseball player B.J. Upton; Tampa Bay Rays' second baseman. Justin himself was a shortstop in high school and drafted as such, yet because the Diamondbacks have young Stephen Drew at shortsop, Justin was moved to center field. When called up to the majors on August 2, 2007, Chris B. Young was already patroling center. Upton was therefore shifted over to right, where the D-backs are planning on keeping him for this upcoming year.
