Just when you thought they couldn't sign another Free Agent... (Patriots Update - August 19)

The New England Patriots have signed 20 year vet Vinny Testaverde to be their backup QB. This move makes tons of sense. In a league where rolling with 2 QB's is very dangerous, and seeing the rookie who was supposed to be their third string QB can't handle the intensity of practice, they had to sign another QB. He hopefully will never see the field untill week 17, when the patriots will have everything wrapped up.
Regardless, he's a good insurance policy. He was a good starter in his day, and was a member of the team last year. He can help Cassell develop, and potentially help Brady if needed. He is the only one to have thrown a TD pass in 20 consecutive seasons, which shows that even at his age, he can still lead an ofense.
Maroney Update
The only real problem the pats have right now lies here, with 2nd year RB Laurence Maroney, who is still unable to play from his shoulder surgery he had during the off season. Although it's not a big deal that he's missing the pre-season, I'd feel better if I could see him play at least one series in the pre-season so I know he's good to go.
Maroney should be a vital part of the patriot's offense this season. He is a strong runner that is a benifit in the passing game. The patriots were at their best last season when Maroney and Dillon combined for over 100 yards/game. If Maroney can perform at that level, then he should help to lead the patriots on their way to a Feburary trip to Glendale.
Notes
- Still no news on the Asante Sammuel situation. MVN is suggesting no news is good news, but it does appear the patriots are planning on a season without him. Ellis Hobbs and Chad Scott have taken reps at first team Corner, and rookie Brandon Meriweather and Randall Gay have been rotating at the 3rd CB position.
- Wes Welker has all ready become one of Brady's favorite targets. Moss has yet to really show his ability in the pre season, and Stallworth is starting to show his ability, but he has only played in one game. If either Moss or Stallworth falters, don't be suprised to see Welker in a starting role.
