Just how much will the head-butt affect Zidane's legacy?

by user Patrickburke1980

Which argument would you tend to agree with?

Argument #1

I don't care what Zidane did his whole career. It's out the window. He will always be remembered for that one act which showed him to be a weak-minded coward, cheap shot artist and a disgrace.

Argument #2

Zidane will be most remebered for scoring two goals against Brazil to lead France to victory in the World Cup Finals in 1998 as the host country, but this will without a doubt be a bad blemish on his otherwise excellent career (spotted as it may be with cheap shots, etc.)

It was really violent, and totally unnecessary. Big check in the bad box.

2nd arguement. I'd still like to know what Materrazi said/did to provoke him.

OK, but still. Materrazi is Italian, Zidane is French/Algerian. What could he have said. And Materrazi's best friend on his Inter Milan club team is supposedly Obafemi Martens, a Nigerian.

Zidane played in Italy, so I'm sure he understands some choice Italian phrases Materazzi might throw at him but still, I can't imagine what would've pissed him off that much...

At the end of the day, Zidane was one of the best players ever, and the best of the last generation. But last night clouded that reputation. No-one can take away his position as a great footballer. However, this moment is a blotch on his career.

As a casual soccer fan and an American with a very short term memory, the image of Zidane headbutting someone in the chest will be the one that last with me forever. It may have been the worst melt down in sports history.

This is the last image of this clown that the world will see of him - as far as playing soccer. Hence, this is what he will be remembered for.

Yeah, the Yankees choked, but this guy melted down, and the whole world saw it. Especially since 2 mins before he did it he almost hit the game winning header.

In four weeks it will be forgotten... When everyone looks back at his career, you will remember the fantastic stuff he's done, and as a little sidenote, his violent temper, that bubbled now and then. He has done some terrible things on the pitch. And some wonderful things as well!

neither - who cares for two reasons... 1) its soccer and this is America, no one watches that; 2) he's French, since when do we care one way or another about the French?

to sayhey-rod, are you implying that italians are easier to make fun of? what exactly did you mean? "OK, but still. Materrazi is Italian, Zidane is French/Algerian. What could he have said. And Materrazi's best friend on his Inter Milan club team is supposedly Obafemi Martens, a Nigerian."

I was trying to say that I don't understand what really, really strong racial barriers exist btwn italians and french. Sorry to be unclear there. But then I read that Algerians are looked down upon even in France, and further some are claiming materazzi called zidane a terrorist. So evidently there is some background there.

Alex - the post says "which argument would you agree with". My comment is on topic, as I agree with neither, whether you agree with/like it or not. Since when do all comments have to support the position of the original post? Dont be a hater! :)

But you're wrong on two counts. 1) People in America do watch football, they've talked about it a lot. 2) Americans do care about the French, one namely, being George W. Bush. A fairly important American, I think you'll agree. So making contradictory comments is fine, but make sure they're not wrong!

The Paris-based anti-racism advocacy group SOS-Racism issued a statement Monday quoting "several very well informed sources from the world of football" as saying Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist." It demanded that FIFA, soccer's world governing body, investigate and take any appropriate action.

I think for casual fans it'll obviously have a large affect because that's all casual fans will remember him for. For the hardcore fans that watched him over the years, I doubt it'll have a big affect. It's not like Zidane losing his temper is a new occurrence.

That's entirely true! We admire Zidane for his dignity, passion and creativity, and totally support his courageous act against injustice. Looking back at the final match again, one can easily see Italian tactic to win the tournament ny hurting the French players, rolling and whining, and harshly provoking -- any dirty job they could think of, from the first minute when they intentionally hurt T. Henry so badly! The cruel acts of the Italian players indeed was unforgivable. It's only Zidane who had the courage to fight against sinful intentions! We support and adore him always!

If this had occurred in any game other than the World Cup final, it would have been little more than a footnote to Zidane's career. It still would have been just as dumb on his part, but let's face it, would Bill Buckner, Chris Webber or Leon Lett still have been remembered most for their gaffes had they not occurred at the highest levels and most visible events of their respective sports?

Zidane IS an adult, and a courageous adult, that's why he did this brave act against the hooligan Italian player to protect human dignity, even at the expense of personal glory!!

We should open our eyes and see more clearly: the Italian team had planned to attack brutally from all sides - verbally and physically - right from the start. It is so obvious. People like to criticize Zidane for losing his cool, but how can you, when someone call your mother and sister a whore, or wants openly to strip off the clothes of your wife, or wish cruel death befalling your whole family - how could you take that? I wonder why Zidane just butted with his head, which should not be too strong (disregarding the whining play of Marterazzi), and not with his strong fists?! I might even have faught Marterazzi on the face with both hands and then kick him hard to teach him a lesson of respect, forget about red cards or whatever!!
