  • Honus Wagner hits his 3000th hit becoming just the second player in major league history to do so.

  • Mel Ott, managing for the New York Giants, gets ejected twice in the same day for arguing with the umpires. He gets tossed in both games of a double header as the Giants drop both of them to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1 and 5-1.

  • Michel Jazy ran the mile in 3 minutes, 53.6 seconds breaking the record set by Peter Snell in 1964.

  • Minnesota set a major league record with six home runs in one inning.

  • After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes many thought the Belmont Stakes would be a coronation for Secretariat, as only four horses entered the third leg of the Triple Crown. Fans waiting for the first Triple Crown in 25 years would not be disappointed as the thoroughbred won by an incredible 31 lengths in a record time of 2:24.

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Mario Lemieux with their first overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft.

  • Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes set fire to her boyfriend's house. Her boyfriend was Andre Rison of the Atlanta Falcons.

  • Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox hit his 200th career home run.
  • Ryan Hancock became the first California Angel pitcher to get a hit since Nolan Ryan did it in 1972 (24 years).

  • Bobby Valentine, managing the New York Mets, gets tossed in the 12th inning for arguing a catcher's interference call. He returns to the dugout wearing a fake mustache and glasses disguise. He is suspended for 2 games and fined for the disguise.

  • Ray Bourque of the Colorado Avalanche won his first Stanley Cup of the 22 year career. He retired from the NHL 17 days later.
  • Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche became the first National Hockey League player to win three Conn Smythe Trophies. The award is given to the playoff's Most Valuable Player.
  • John Vanbiesbrouck of the New Jersey Devils announced his retirement from the NHL after 19 seasons.

  • The New Jersey Devils won the Stanley Cup after defeating the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4 games to 3. Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils became the first goaltender to produce 7 playoff shutouts in a single-season.

  • Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds hit his 600th career home run. Only Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa had more home runs at the time.
