- Richie Ashburn, a Philadelphia Phillies outfielder, extends his hitting streak to 23 games, tying a major league rookie record.

- Jim Crowford made the first hole-in-one in the British Amateur golf championship.

- The National Hockey League awarded six new franchises. The Minnesota North Stars (later moved to become the Dallas Stars), Oakland Seals (now defunct), Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and the St. Louis Blues received their NHL franchises.

- The Los Angeles Dodgers retire the number 24 in honor of Walt Alston

- Willie Horton of the Seattle Mariners hits his 300th homerun becoming the 43rd major leaguer to reach the milestone.

- Nolan Ryan walks 2 batters as the Houston Astros defeat the New York Mets, 3-0. That made 1777 walks for Ryan's career and he passes Early Wynn as the all-time walks leader.

- Cal Ripken's streak of 8,243 consecutive innings begins and will last for 904 games

- Brett Hull of the St. Louis Blues won the Hart Trophy. The feat created the first father-and-son team to win the Hart Trophy. His father Bobby Hull won the trophy in 1964-65 and 1965-66.

- Eddie Murray knocks in 2 runs giving him 1509 for his career, enough to pass Mickey Mantle as the all-time RBI leader among switch-hitters.

- The Chicago Cubs select pitcher Dontrelle Willis in the 8th round of the amateur draft.

- Manny Ramirez is intentionally walked 4 times, tying a major league record, as the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-3 in an 18 inning game that would take 5 hours and 52 minutes to complete.
- Barry Bonds becomes the quickest player in major league history to reach the 30 homer mark for a season. It took the slugger 57 games, 6 fewer than the 63 that it took Babe Ruth to reach the same mark in 1928

- The Houston Astros rename their field to Minute Maid Park. The stadium had opened up as Enron Field, but when Enron went belly up in a huge scandal, Houston paid them $2.1 million to get the naming rights back.
- Juan Gonzalez hits his 400th career home run. He becomes the 34th major leaguer and first Puerto Rican born player to reach the milestone.
- Barry Bonds hits his 587th career home run to pass Frank Robinson and move into 4th place on the all-time home run list.

- John Franco becomes the 8th pitcher in major league history to appear in 1000 games
