- Tim Keefe becomes the second player in major league baseball to reach the 300 win milestone. The submariner, nicknamed "Sir Timoth", won 19 straight decisions at one point in 1888 and had at least 40 victories in a season two times.

- Gus Bell, outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates and father of major leaguer, Derek Bell, hit for the cycle in a 12-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies

- Sandy Koufax throws a no-hitter, the third of his career, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-0.

- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder, Curt Flood, drops a fly ball against the Chicago Cubs that ends his errorless streak at 227 games and 568 chances.

- Don Drysdale tosses his 6th consecutive complete game shutout for the Los Angeles Dodgers as he beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-0. Over the 6 games he was 6-0 with 42 K's in 54 scoreless innings. He allowed just 27 hits and 9 walks.

- The umpires are forced to call a game, resulting in a Cleveland Indians forfeit on one of the worst promotional nights of all-time, ten-cent beer night. With the score tied at 5 in the ninth, the umps call the game due to unruly fans. An estimated 60,000 cups of beer is sold to 25,134 people.
- The NFL granted the Seattle Seahawks franchise.
- Henry Aaron set a National League record with his 16th career grand slam.

- Ken Reitz hits a solo home run in the tenth inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals the 1-0 win over the New York Mets. Jim Kaat, a 41 year old recently traded from the New York Yankees went the distance to get the win.
- Gordie Howe, formerly of the Detroit Red Wings, announced his retirement from hockey. At the time he was playing for the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association.

- It's the end of an era as for the first time in 32 years, Arnold Palmer fails to make the cut for the U.S. Open golf tournament.

- Steffi Graf won the French Open for the second straight year.

- Ramon Hernandez of the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-hits the Atlanta Braves and strikes out 18 batters en route to a 6-0 victory.

- Pamela Davis throws 1 scoreless inning of relief and gets the win for the Jacksonville Suns, the AA affiliate for the Detroit Tigers and becomes the first women to pitch for a major league farm club. The game is an exhibition against the Australian Olympic team.
- Eddie Murray hit his 535th double moving to 18th on the all-time list by passing Lou Gehrig.
- Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche started in his 133rd consecutive playoff game.

- The Cleveland Indians become the first publicly traded major league baseball team as they sell out all 4 million shares of their team at $15 a piece.

- Julius Erving reported his 19-year-old son, Cory, missing. His body was found on July 6, 2000.
- Fred McGriff of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays got his 2,000th career hit.

- Jeff DaVanon of the Anaheim Angels has his third multi-homer game in a row becoming just the 4th player in history to accomplish the feat.

- Barry Bonds and Rafael Palmeiro both homer becoming just the third pair of players with 500 homers to homer in the same game, joining Willie Mays and Ernie Banks in 1970 and Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in 1971
- Julio Franco becomes the oldest player to ever hit a grand slam as the 45 year old's homer was the difference in a 8-4 Atlanta Braves win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

- The U.S. defeated Britain in the first Ryder Cup International Golf Championship.

- The Pirates beat the Braves 14-2 in the first night game at Forbes Field.
- The Dodgers beat the Cardinals 10-1 as Sportsman's Park hosted its first night game. It was the first National League game to be played at night.
