  • Casey at the Bat, a poem by Ernest L. Thayer, appears in the San Francisco Examiner

  • Lou Gehrig becomes the first player in the 20th century to hit 4 home runs in one game. He barely misses a fifth as the New York Yankees set a record with 50 total bases in the game and beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 20-13.
  • John McGraw resigns as the manager of the New York Giants after 32 years, 3 World Series victories, and 9 National League pennants.

  • The Philadelphia A's score 11 times in the 2nd inning, but still lose the game, 17-11 to the New York Yankees who scored 10 in the fifth.

  • Davey Johnson of the Philadelphia Phillies hits his second pinch-hit grandslam of the season becoming the first major league player to hit two pinch-hit homers in the same season.

  • The Chicago Cubs hit 3 grandslams and beat the Houston Astros, 22-7.

  • The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs play in the longest baseball game in major league history. The contest lasted 22 innings and took 7 hours and 14 minutes before the Astros came out ahead, 5-4.
  • Nolan Ryan pitches a complete game, one-hitter, the 11th of his career as the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners, 6-1.

  • Pedro Martinez pitches 9 perfect innings before allowing a double in the 10th. His Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres, 1-0.

  • Manny Ramirez hits a 491 foot blast in Toronto. It is the longest home run hit in SkyDome history.

  • Buck Martinez is fired by the Toronto Blue Jays becoming the fifth manager of the year to get the boot.

  • Derek Jeter is named the captain of the New York Yankees
  • Sammy Sosa's bat shatters and exposes a cork center. He is suspended 8 games for using a corked bat.

  • The New York Knickerbockers became the first baseball team to wear uniforms. They wore straw hats, white shirts and blue trousers.
