  • Bobby Hull signed a 10-year hockey contract for $2,500,000. He became a player and coach of the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association.

  • France defeats Spain two goals to nil to win their first European Championship. The French goals were scored by Michel Platini in the 57th minute and Bruno Bellone in the 90th minute. The match was played at Parc des Princes in Paris.

  • Tennis player Anne White wore only a body stocking at Wimbledon.

  • College World Series: Cal State Fullerton wins the NCAA College World Series, defeating Texas 3-2 to win the best-of-three championship series 2-0. The Longhorns later stir up controversy by refusing to accept the runner-up trophy.
