- Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany 5-3 on penalties to win the UEFA European Football Championship. The match ended drawn 2-2 after extra time which required the use of penalties to determine the winner. The match was played at Crvena Zvezda Stadium, Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

- On Father's Day afternoon at Busch Stadium, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. goes deep on a 2-2 fastball from the St. Louis Cardinals' Matt Morris, securing a spot in the record books as the 20th player with 500 career home runs.

- Ivan Rodriguez made his MLB debut for the Texas Rangers. He went 1-4 with 2 RBI while batting 9th and starting at catcher as the Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox, 7-3.
