Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany 5-3 on penalties to win the UEFA European Football Championship. The match ended drawn 2-2 after extra time which required the use of penalties to determine the winner. The match was played at Crvena Zvezda Stadium, Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

On Father's Day afternoon at Busch Stadium, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. goes deep on a 2-2 fastball from the St. Louis Cardinals' Matt Morris, securing a spot in the record books as the 20th player with 500 career home runs.

Ivan Rodriguez made his MLB debut for the Texas Rangers. He went 1-4 with 2 RBI while batting 9th and starting at catcher as the Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox, 7-3.
